The Graphics of Linoge return.

Since the immediate, knee-jerk response from anti-rights cultists being pointed to this site is “ZOMG, that’s a RWNJ site!  Everything on it is WRONG!” (otherwise known as a genetic fallacy, for those curious) I am going to go ahead and link to my references right here, at the top of the post.

– The starting point for the number of firearms in America is the lower bound of the Small Arms Survey of 2003.

– All further numbers are derived from adding or subtracting the appropriate numbers from the Firearms Commerce in the United States Annual Statistical Update published by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, back to 1986.  For the 1981-1985 numbers, I used Shooting Industry News’ records.

– The deaths data, as well as population data, came from the Centers for Disease Control’s WISQARS Fatal Injury Reports.

– “Shall issue” states are tracked by Radical Gun Nuttery.

  1. There is another trend I see, coming off a Netflix Law & Order bender.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, the majority of murders were drug related, muggins, or random street crime. NYC was portrayed as a very violent city where civilized (especially white) people should not go out at night. Crime ruled and the police were hard pressed to do anything.

In the mid to late 90’s the episodes shifted to more white collar crime and financial conspiracies. Yes, it makes for some more intriguing TV. But Law & Order has always tried to maintain cultural relevance, and the shift in the show reflected the end of the crack epidemic and work of Giuliani to clean up NYC.

The crack epidemic hit from 1984 to 1994. Note the big green peak in the middle of the chart. With the anti-crack reforms that went into place in the early 90’s (and Giulaini in NYC) the end of the crack epidemic is largely responsible for the decrease in gun crime beginning in 93-94.

  2. The antis will just focus on the top line, number of firearm deaths.

    Ignore everything else.

Net result. They will claim that firearm related deaths did go down due to gun control laws, but has been rising steadily.
