    1. Found it.

The size of the powder chamber in the breech plug is supposed to hold 2oz or less of powder (going off of someone’s post saying their chamber of Volume X held a Weight Y of Goex) from what I’ve seen on this forum and others, this should wind up with a max range somewhere in the 2-300 yard rage at 45 deg. I figured this was long enough for beginners.

If anyone would like the plans, e-mail me with mortar in the subject line.

  1. I have a 3″ bore, 6 caliber mortar. The powder chamber holds an ounce of 1F black powder. For projectiles, I use empty green bean cans that I half-fill with cement, weighing a total of about 1 lb. I can shoot them over 300 yards. I load them “nose first” to prevent the blast from blowing out the can. They flip after leaving the muzzle and thereafter fly like a giant shotgun slug or demonic shuttlecock. I’ve been meaning to try “grapeshot”, using some of my ball molding castoffs for my flintlocks, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

You can also buy solid round shot for them from places like rotometals.com:

Or, if you’re a “do it yourself” kind of guy, you can buy the molds and cast them yourself:

Of course, due to the laws about destructive devices, you can’t make actual exploding mortar shells without a huge amount of expense and regulatory red tape, so everyone just uses solid shot.
