QOTD: Clayton Cramer

I understand newspapers need to make money.  There isn’t much ad revenue left in the age of  craigslist, spam, and the World Wide Web.  But the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post have both put up paywalls that prevent me reading news stories.  If they think I am going to give money to the house organs of fascism, they are profoundly mistaken.

  1. Every notice I see that says “Please turn off your adblocker” just makes me feel more smug that I have it turned on.

I’ve given sites chances. Even the ones claiming unobtrusive ads were obnoxious when adblock was disabled. If they really want me to stop using an adblocker on their site, they should make it so that I don’t need to: Get rid of the ads entirely. Go to a donation-based system(which many have, and to a significant profit, at that) or get a day job. The bad advertisers have ruined it for everyone.

As for paywalls, there are ways around those: News sites often load the entire article, then put a paywall in front of it. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce my good friend, Nuke Anything Enhanced. Simply right-click on the offending piece of HTML code, and remove. Hey look, that paywall is out of my way now!
