Kill em all. if we’d been doing that from the beginning none of what has happened, as far as hi jacked ships, WOULD have happened.
A couple of fifty caliber rounds into those fishing skiffs, and this problem would be greatly reduced.
There is one group of sea-going vessels that very rarely has interactions with pirates… I will leave you to your own devices to determine what group that is, and why that might be

However, I will say that on my last deployment, we spent somewhere around 6 months cruising around the Persian Gulf and we even took a short jaunt down to the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Djibouti, and do you know how many pirates we saw/chased? 0. We certainly saw the reports (those gCaptain posts seem to be pulled straight from the reports the Navy uses), but they were invariably outside of about a 250+ nm bubble around Navy ships. We assisted in the recovery/liberation of a hijacked ship, but that was more of a “the pirates left so these people need help” situation than anything else.
If we armed commercial ships, I doubt they would have the same level of respect amongst the pirates as our Navy ships do, but a few decimated groups of brigands going back to their bases with stories of their crewmates getting mowed down around them might cause them to re-evaluate their business model. At the very least, it will reduce the number of pirates in the world, and that is never a bad thing.
I am fond to say that if an enterprising cruise ship company was to offer a one week package in that area for shooters, they would make money like they were printing it themselves. Imagine an ad that says: “Use the onboard guns or BYOG&A.24 hour buffet. Additional fees for .50 BMG rifles, 20mm cannons and Miniguns apply.”
