590 feet per second is BB gun speed or close to.

I have become a fan of the slow rimfire cartridges. You can shoot them in your backyard from a long gun without the need for ear protection. Within a reasonable distance they are pretty accurate, and the occasional backyard pest ends up going bye-bye without too much mess.

I still need to get around and get a .22LR revolver and a bolt action or pump rifle in the same caliber. I have a rifle loaner which I have been using and it is a joy to feed it sub sonics without having to endure the partial ejections & feeding issues of shooting from a semi-auto.

Also, it seems I am not the only one who likes this type of ammo, so if you see it, grab some and “hoard” it ’cause it disappears off the shelves rather quickly.

  1. BCE had a writeup, a few days ago, on a gizmo from Witt Machine to make them even quieter. (Apparently not a suppressor, more of a linear comp, although these days who knows what will be decreed at some point.)

  2. My ancient Remington Model 12 pump feeds Shorts, Longs, and Long Rifles interchangeably. With a 24 inch barrel, 22 Shorts are basically hearing safe, barrel pressure down to nearly atmospheric and subsonic, perfect for backyard pests. Who needs a suppressor?

    1. Well, if JC Whitney sold suppressors, in that case it wouldn’t just suppress sounds it’d actually suck sound back in!

  3. You’re supposed to wear hearing protection with a .22 rifle? News to me. Also, that round is only 290fps faster than a .68cal paintball gun…

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
