28 out of the top 30 ‘murder capitals’ – and all of the top 24 – have mayors who belong to the Democratic Party.  They say that correlation is not causation, and in general I agree:  but that degree of correlation between the dominant political party in each city, and the crime rate in each city, is hard to explain away, IMHO.  Draw your own conclusions

  1. Aren’t almost all significant US cities liberal, though? Most crime is also committed by minorities, who largely vote democrat. This doesn’t really seem like much of a revelation.

  2. And the two ‘R’s on the list are Mayor R. Carey Davis (San Bernadino, California) and Mayor John C. Tkazyik (Poughkeepsie, New York). Based on their states of residence, they’re likely further left than a Texas Democrat, “Republican” label notwithstanding.

They’re about as “conservative” as Chris Christie. Or Michael Bloomberg (who IIRC also ran as a Republican, once upon a time).

    1. As one of the people commenting on the post over there said as well, San-Bernadino is only on the list because of a terrorist attack, and the other Republican-run city is so small that the fact it had 2 more killings than average made the difference between it being on the list and much, much further down.

  3. I’m with the guy who would like to see charts of mayoral affiliation correlated with annual homicide rates. Do killings increase before or after the Democrats take control? Would help determine which is the cart and which is the chicken.

  4. Correlation is not causation. True. So let’s just observe that the correlation between Democrat Mayors and murders is noticeably greater than the correlation between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer and leave it at that.

  5. 7 – Detroit, MI – Mayor Mike Duggan (D)
    6 – Flint, MI – Mayor Karen Weaver (D)
5 – Saginaw, MI – Mayor Dennis Browning

Detroit has had a dem mayor since 1961
Flint (the place of my birth) has been since about the same time.

Times sure change. I remember when Saginaw was a nice town. That was up into the 70’s.
