In Florida, one may use force in the defense of an innocent third party.
If you stop a rapist in Florida from attacking a woman in a Wal-Mart, that’s legal.
If you stop a rapist in San Francisco from attacking a woman, you might go to jail if the Prosecutor feels like it.
Know your local laws.
Not only know the laws, but know the local attitudes of the police and prosecutors. That’s arguably at least as important. Unfortunately.

Don’t care about the local laws. I will not allow an innocent person to be harmed. I’d rather to go jail than let it happen. I will always to the right thing, and will not let bad politicians dissuade me from that.
In a Leftist state, how you present yourself to law enforcement is also important: you should come across as another honest criminal, not a concerned citizen.
Instead of saying you were trying to protect someone, tell them that the guy you shot ripped you off in a drug deal, resisted your armed robbery attempt, and was a member of a rival gang. You could even go so far as to say that they were open Trump supporters, and were overheard misgendering the person they were attacking.
