December 19 in #NYC, during an exchange of words between 2 men , a man pulled out a knife and slashed the other man across the neck , The man fell to the floor and bled to death.

Part of the violent male ritual seems to be demonstrating you are not afraid of your opponent by getting up close and personal while issuing verbal challenges.
If you can smell his breath, you are too damned close and well within his envelope of attack.

Be a coward. Keep as much distance as possible. Remain alive.

Spread the love

  1. Action wins over reaction…. every time. No exceptions. Even Bruce Lee knew to keep just out of reach until the attacker made a mistake in his advance, and when a gun came into play, he retreated into protective cover. At my age, cat-like reflexes are starting to slow just a bit, necessitating smarter tactics…like keeping at least six feet of distance while attempting to break contact by any means available. But in some cases, ‘running away’ is not an option anymore…them feet don’t move like they used to.

  2. And situational awareness … You don’t need hyper detailed mental models, but at least get the major environmental features. You don’t want to catch your heel on a curb, back into a busy street, against a wall or over a cliff (unless you’re a coyote, in which case it’s funny) while trying to make space.

  3. Ah yes the monkey dance. Chest baring, thumping, hand gestured.

Back when I was bouncing I loved the trend of taking ones shirt off to challenge someone to a fight. Not many wannabe thugs played hockey in Southern Alabama cause seeing a beligerant with his shirt blocking his vision was like a red flag to a bull. Yoink it over their head and out the door they go!

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
