I’ve had this one (at least the first four lines) with my wife countless times.
When I lived in Chicagoland, my redneck self was usually the only person with a knife so colleagues and coworkers would ask to borrow mine.
It got to the point where I started carrying a POS loaner knife just to lend to people who asked to borrow one to open boxes.
The thing that always got me was the people who, when I first met them were shocked that I had a knife in my pocket, would “good naturedly” poke fun at me for always carrying a knife…but would constantly ask to borrow it after they knew I had one.
Yup. Some people you just cant reach… was at a family thing awile back, someone said “hey I need a knife” my wifes niece says I bet Curby has a knife.. i said no, 3…. ( under my breath- and a gun). Another tool people dont get- a FLASHLIGHT. mines in a holster on my belt (EDC(another STUPID abbreviation)its always there)
I bought a cheap utility knife and a cheap (Walmart Ozark trail clearanced for 50¢) knife to hand off at work. My good utility knife and normal knife stay in my tool bag and on my belt
Or just,
“Hey, man, can I borrow your knife?”
“Nope.”
Followed, if need be, by:
“Why not?!”
“Because the last person who borrowed it, tried to use it as a prybar and broke the ceramic blade. Last I heard his right eye had nearly half vision back…”
I was told many, many years ago by someone I deeply respect; to ALWAYS carry 3 knives
1) everyone knows about
2) one some people know about &
3) one no one knows about
I consider this to be a minimum number
1 multi tool + 1 or 2 folders + 1 fixed blade
plus all my other EDC gear
To the utter horror of today’s snowflakes back in the fifties and sixties I carried a Cub Scout or Boy Scout pocket knife every day to school. Never cut myself or anyone else in all that time.
Perfectly reasonable, I carried a Swiss Army knife in middle school and high school in the 70s and 80s. Heck nobody seemed bothered about my son’s Leatherman tool in 2014. I guess some is time and some is place.
@Nuke Road Warrior: My Cub uniform belt has a slide with a snap to hold the official pocket knife. Of course, I wore at school when I had a den meeting afterwards.
A famous brand multitool review I found on the intarwebz today:
“I do like [brand] I’ve been buying their stuff for a long time. But this tool was trash and poorly built. I’m military so I use multi tools all the time I’ve never had one break in half before. I was prying a nail out of a crate and snapped the knife right in half. If i was in a survival situation I would be in trouble. I no longer trust [brand] for my survival packs and am switching to something more reliable.”
Tried to pry a nail from a crate and snapped the knife blade. And it’s the tool’s fault.

Speaking of knives no one knows about, I have the feeling that Hideaway Knives has closed down, but it’s not entirely clear. They certainly had an interesting product.

I have a “Cutting Bean” in my Day Job bag, and another in a different bag, for cutting tape. Since the sharp bit is always covered, unless you hold it extended, it’s not on anyone’s list (aside from the TSA). And it means I don’t use a good blade for tape or cardboard. Or other people use my good blade for tape . . . Or scraping acid and corrosion off of battery terminals. (He still owes me.)
