I saw J Kb’s post and the imbecile idea that “In the Name of Equity, California Will Discourage Students Who Are Gifted at Math” and my mind immediately raced to this movie. The soft racism of low expectations is faithfully recreated.

It is the interesting problem of “what if the results are outside of expectations?” How do you handle that?
Years ago I was worried about an employee stealing. Wasn’t real sure what was going on or how or what, so I got the books and read and read. In the end I learned a few things.
The first thing is that counting the cash drawer is exactly as important as I thought it was to begin with (I fired the best friend of my co-owners wife because she couldn’t count the cash drawer).
Statistics say that if you count the drawer every day, over the course of a week, the drawer should be off by no more than a nickle. While any one day might be off by a little, over the course of time, it should average towards zero.
If the average is low, then the employee is stealing from you. If the average is high, then the employee is stealing from your customers.
In this case, it was consistently high, over the course of 5 weeks. I let her go. Didn’t accuse her of anything, just let her go.
Statistics can do amazing things like that, find an issue and tell you what it means.
If you are looking at test scores with an average of 75% and you get one group that is getting 85%, you look at that group to see why. You look to see what is the commonality of that group. Are they all in the same classroom? Did they all have the same instructor? Did they all have the same proctor? What is it that makes this group stand out.
If the individuals of that group are not normally at the 85%, alarm bells go off.
It is almost never the level of instructor that brings about that sort of score increase. But it can be. It is just so uncommon that everybody assumes something else first.
Ah, the “spot the anomaly” game!
Dimly remembered, and possibly apocryphal… the story is told of a semiconductor production line, long ago, in Texas. Someone was keeping close track of manufacturing yields.
An anomaly appeared! The night shift was turning out a higher percentage of good chips than expected. The process was supposed to be the same. Investigation ensued.
Turned out the night shift had been sneaking smokes, and a trace of carbon monoxide improved the results of some process step.
A long time ago (30+ years) during a safety lecture at a semiconductor fab I was told the story of how awkward semiconductor manufacturing can be.
They noticed an issue with yield on one of the lines, sometimes it was significantly better than expected sometimes it was disastrously worse and they needed to track down the cause. They charted the yield rates and noticed that it was a predictable cycle that varied from very high to very low yield over the course of 4 weeks. Then it suddenly went back to expected yield in the middle of a cycle for a week and then resumed the cycle. Someone noticed that when the cycle resumed it resumed at the point in the cycle it works have been at if there had been no interruption. When they asked fab foreman what was different about that week one of the workers was out the whole week.
Trying to get to the bottom of the mystery they engineered a temporary move of the worker to another part of the fab for two weeks and the deviation went away and came back when she returned to the fab line. And that’s when things got awkward. She was one of the best workers it was a 28 day cycle. The solution was to promote her to a new position that spent two weeks on the fab line and two weeks in the office area doing paperwork.
And the lawyers heaved a sigh of relief. 🙂

Um…I don’t support businesses that hate me. The video you embedded doesn’t work because it’s listed as age restricted so to watch it you have to have a youtube account.
I refuse to support a company that hates me and my worldview. Honestly, it’s still a bit of a mystery to me why so many on the right still patronize those businesses while constantly decrying their censorship and bigotry.
Why should they change? There are no consequences to their actions, we may bitch and moan, but most just keep on making them money.
But I digress. The point is, the only way I’ll watch a youtube video is if it’s embedded, I won’t visit their site and I absolutely won’t create an account, so I’d love to watch it so I’d have some idea of what your point is, if you have an alternative source.
