  1. This is a gun crime committed with an assault weapon. This person needs to be banned from owning an AR ever again.

  2. It’s supposed to, ah, counteract the torque from the bolt unlocking! Yeah, that’s it!

  3. Q: what do you do when you realize you have a carbine gas ported barrel and bought a rifle length gas tube?

    A: … Not this.

(And wtf is with the upside down gas block??!)

    1. My guess is that he didn’t have the barrel seated in all the way or the barrel pin in the barrel extension, so when he torqued the barrel nut, it rotated the entire barrel. The pin is supposed to engage a cut out in the upper that keeps the barrel aligned when tightening the barrel nut.

      1. Maybe. Except that the gas block looks dead on upside down… And trying to torque the barrel nut with the gas block in place?

You know … I’m pretty sure I don’t want to know the thought process here.

        1. With the gas block being upside down, the direction of twist and the shiny marks on the front of the barrel nut where the gas tube skipped down from 12 o’clock to 9 o’clock leads me to speculate that the owner was trying to remove a stuck muzzle device when the barrel extension threads broke free before the muzzle threads did.

      2. I’m going to go with it being fully assembled, but not torqued down.

What we’re seeing is the place where everything stopped when the gas tube finally sheared. When he gets that but off there’s going to be a gouge where the index pin on the barrel extension has gone through 180˚ of threads.
