You are assuming they knew he is Jewish.
The 40’s were a wakeup call for a lot of Jewish people- when the people who talk about killing you start, DON’T PEACEFULLY SUBMIT!!!! Better to die fighting in Warsaw than to be meekly stripped and herded into a shower in Auschwitz.
And, yet, that is what the secular Jews in New York City and other big population places have done to themselves.
