How can students advocate for speech codes and still believe that freedom of speech is secure? The answer, as an intern at the liberal Center for American Progress (CAP) put it in 2017, is that “most college students do not feel that the anti-hate movement puts their [own] right to free speech under attack” (my emphasis). That is linked to the mistaken idea that (to quote George Lakoff), “hate speech is not free speech.” Or as that aforementioned CAP intern put it, hate speech—however that term may be defined—is “outside the bounds of free speech.”
Free Speech for Me, But Not for Thee

IMHO- free speech means the gubmint canNOT tell you what you may or may not say. To me it doesn’t mean you can spew anything your mind comes up with.
Curby, why doesn’t it mean that? If it does mean that, who enforces limits? The government, presumably, but you just said they can’t tell you what you may say.
Perhaps you meant something different. L. Neil Smith expressed his views on the subject as “you have the perfect right to yell “fire” in a crowded theater — and pay the consequences if you do”. In other words, no prior restraint, but “free speech” does not excuse you from liability for damages caused by your speech.
Just like it won’t be genocide when they do it.
Once again folks. They are children. Not just the college students, but pretty much everyone on the side of “I support free speech, just not hate speech.”
If they were adults, they would be able to define hate speech in a manner that is measurable by a reasonable individual. However, they cannot.
As noted above, the limits of free speech end when there is a reasonable expectation that your words will knowingly cause harm to others. Yelling “FIRE” in a crowded theater, libel. slander, inciting to riot. Knowingly do any of that, and you lose you right for protection under the 1st.
However, the leftists/children define hate speech as anything critical of them, their ideals, or their political leanings. When a conservative speaks at a university and says “maybe you should earn what you want.” it is hate speech. When they point out disconnects in a liberal’s argument, it is “hate speech.” Whenever President Trump so much as burps, it is hate speech.
Why? Because it goes against the leftist narratives, and likely forces them to reconsider their arguments.
