Don’t even pretend like self-defense is an option. Antifa goons were there in plate carriers with rifles. This guy was outnumbered, outgunned, was tackled, and had his gun stolen.
The Portland Police issued a statement:
On May 5, 2021, at about 12:12 p.m., Portland Police were dispatched the report of a pedestrian struck by a car near North Interstate Avenue and North Killingsworth Street. This was related to a large group walking in the street there.
As officers arrived they did not find any pedestrians who claimed to have been struck. The large group had moved away, still walking in nearby streets, some openly carrying firearms. Officers remained in the area searching for anyone who may have been injured and to collect evidence and information.
Additional calls came in from people who had been driving vehicles in the area and who were blocked by the crowd in the street. One person said people in the crowd broke out their vehicle windows, damaged tires, and sprayed them with some kind of irritant near North Interstate Avenue and North Killingsworth Street.
A person in another vehicle blocked by the crowd near North Alberta Street and North Michigan Avenue got into a dispute with people who surrounded him and took a firearm from him, as well as tools and keys.
Portland Police attempted to collect as many statements as possible from those involved. Officers will document as much of the incidents as witnesses share and will attempt to gather available evidence, including video for follow-up on any criminal allegations.
The police are asking for tips, but who is going to rat on Antifa when Antifa can come to their home in the middle of the night with lights and lasers and megaphones and camp out on their lawn harassing and threatening them?
Assaulting motorists, threatening people with guns, trying to illegally detain people, and the police were utterly impotent.
This is not people LARPing as revolutionaries. This is an armed terrorist cell that has demonstrated that the governments of Portland and Oregon are unwilling and unable to stop them.

In the rural parts, locals tend to fix problems extrajudicially (on their own). Why? Because it works and because it doesn’t feed the marketplace that the court system has become.

From what we’ve seen going on in Portland, the police would have arrested the victim if they were present. So I actually doubt they are looking for tips to arrest antifa, but rather to bolster their case against the victim.
Several things to unpack here.
First, Senate Bill 554 (as amended, currently “554-B”) would make the victim criminally liable if the gun antifa stole from him is used in crime in the next two years. Thankfully he can’t be charged for having his gun stolen — the bill hasn’t been signed … yet — but the next guy whose gun is “materially redistributed” probably won’t be so lucky.
Second, and I cannot emphasize this enough, open carry is prohibited in Portland, even with a CHL (which I seriously doubt any of the antifa thugs have). Oregon’s state preemption statute allows the legislature to delegate authority to regulate firearms, and subsequent statutes allow cities to regulate carry. Portland, as you might expect, opted to enact such regulation and prohibits open carry (they can’t do anything about concealed carry with a CHL; that statute still overrides local ordinances).
Bottom line: If you or I open-carried in Portland, or if we assaulted and/or illegally detained people, we’d be arrested and charged. Twice as bad if we did it all at the same time (the up-charge is pretty serious for armed assault and/or kidnapping).
But when antifa assaults and illegally detains people while illegally open-carrying and actively brandishing firearms, it’s all OK.
The only good news is, that’s exactly the kind of politics-based selective enforcement that gets charges dismissed and laws overturned “as applied”. OTOH, that only happens if you can find a sympathetic judge, so there’s that.
Yea, better to just stay the Hell out of Portland. Nothing there is worth the risk.
