I do crap on Hollywood plenty, but sometimes movies do have teachable moments:

If you are in a crowded locale which is suddenly invaded by thugs and demand people go to the back room/bathroom/cooler and stay there till they are done, you best start shooting as it is the equivalent of being invited by the SS to take a communal shower.  They are rare cases, but invariably end with a stack of bodies to be found later by the authorities.

The gunmen herded four restaurant employees into a walk-in freezer, then rifled the restaurant safe after shooting its lock to open it, police said.

They then returned to the freezer and opened fire, killing Mrs. Figueroa and Eugene Jefferson, 35, a dishwasher at the restaurant, police said. The two other employees were not injured.

The third victim, postal worker Peter Santangelo, 23, apparantly walked into the restaurant to deliver mail during the robbery and was gunned down as he tried to flee, police said.

Trivia point: The owner of the restaurant was Heavyweight champion Joe Frazier.

  1. Many self-defense scribes have advised the same idea: if you are being asked/forced to leave the initial scene, it ain’t going to work out well for you, so time for an explosive defense.

    (Good movie, BTW.)

    1. If you have not read the book, go for it. The movie is compressed in time to accommodate a lot of the book, but the book explains some things better which makes sense. And the frigging movie is great.

  2. When I was in college, a gruesome murder was perpetrated in the Taco Bell between my apartment and my school. April 9th, 1992, two brothers waited outside the Taco Bell that night for one of the employees to take out the trash. They took the employee at gunpoint, marched them back inside and corralled three employees and the manager in the walk in freezer. Three of them were shot, and the last one stabbed as the gun failed to fire.
I had lunch in that Taco Bell the previous day after finishing classes. I knew the employees. Not personally, but as a collage kid, I ate there pretty regularly because in those days, you could eat a lot for a couple of bucks. Here is a link to the story:

This event cemented in my mind that I would not rely on others for my own personal safety. I applied for and got my Florida carry permit that year and have been carrying ever since.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
