This is an interesting example of why lynchings, as satisfactory as they can be, end up creating more problems than solutions. South Dakota’s Supreme Court vacated the initial verdict of three individuals involved in murder and the State had already lined up two of them as prosecution witness to go after the rest of the gang.

But the mob got the freed Indians, lynched them and now the prosecution has no case to pursue against the rest: They get to go free. And I reckon with the eyes of the governor and the State Supreme Court, probably pissed off at the blatant disregard for their decision  indeed they went away. Crime went unpunished.
