There has been a slashing spree in New York City.  There have been a number of edge weapon attacks in the NYC Subway system recently, including a woman hacked up with a machete.  In response to this, the Mayor of NYC has encouraged residence of New York to buy and carry guns to defend themselves from blade wielding attackers.

I’m kidding.  Of course he’s not.  The NYC government just decriminalized peeing in the street and turnstile jumping  because… post Giuliani NYC was just too nice?  No, the local media is downplaying the Subway slashing with a “crime happens, nothing to see here” casualness.  Of course more people will be killed, but as long nobody gets killed in an act of self defense, who in NYC really cares?

  1. It’s not surprising that some people use knives to commit violence in NYC or anywhere. What may surprise many — as it surprised me when I saw it at the American Society of Criminology meetings last November — is that almost 4 times as many people present at NYC hospitals from stabbing incidents as from shooting incidents. I hope you can see the photo I took of the data at the conference here: https://twitter.com/gunculture2pt0/status/667361929200017408

  2. Bernard Goetz…Paging Bernard Goetz…

(yes I am aware that he is regarded as a racist prick, but one need not be a saint to do good…)

  3. J.Kb, I live in NYC and this is all a result of De Blasio policies, nothing else. He has effectively neutered the police, not that they are that good at shooting accurately as is. Also, the crime is largely in the outer boroughs, though some does seep into Manhattan as well.

The local media doesn’t downplay anything, they love to take shots at him, and everyone points out crime is on the uptick, even in places where it isn’t, just to shit on him. Rightfully so… he really sucks.

  4. I’ve seen the media complain about the increase in quality of life crimes, peeing I’m streets, bathing in fountains, etc. Not seen much in the online print media about the uptick in violent crime. I figured “commuter hacked to death with machete on subway by insane man” would have been bigger news. So much so I woukd have caught it on my daily news trolling. But yes de blasio sucks.

  5. anonymous: I’m glad to know subway rides might effectively be free now (depending on what extent turnstile-jumping has been decriminalized).

Then again, thinking of the machete attack, you get what you pay for, security-wise.

  6. Archer: Don’t kid yourself; in Manhattan, if there’s a cop in the station (undercovers patrol the subways, good luck pointing them out), and you jump the turnstile, you’re not getting away with it. Not even close to worth the risk.

I don’t know the statistics, but I do know that cops patrol Manhattan heavily, and any criminal action here gets intense scrutiny. In the 1990’s it took murders in the city to get increased police presence on the streets, but its here now, and not going away. If you google Manhattan shootings, you’ll see that they close the cases pretty fast.
