Semi-retired like Vito Corleone before the heart attack. Consiglieri to J.Kb and AWA. I lived in a Gun Control Paradise: It sucked and got people killed. I do believe that Freedom scares the political elites.

  1. “Common-sense gun control” in the 1870’s.

Not sure what “a non-civilized Indian” is. I wasn’t aware that Indians were issued ID cards stating that they somehow qualified as “civilized.” Maybe an FOID?

  2. For larger then small arms they are also still referred to as “fixed ammunition”, such as the 76mm rounds for the Mk75 OTO Melara that were on the Perry Class Frigates. There are also “semi-fixed” ammunition where the projectile can be taken off so the powder can be changed, the old Mk 42 5″ guns used that, not sure if anything still uses that. Larger guns use separate-loading ammunition where the propellant is in bags or cartridges.

  3. I’m still fixated on the phrasing of “There is no statute against this crime.” It seems like an early example of ‘leftist’ bias in the news even 140 years back.

The leading presumption of the phrase is that the ‘crime’ is inherent (Malum in se) rather than something that ‘just not ought to be’ (Malum prohibitum).

If there is no statute then there is no crime!

In other words, it’s just a bunch of pearl clutching hand wringers whining about how ‘there outta be a LAW!’

  4. Fixed ammunition- powder inside a cartridge case with primer on one end and bullet on another.

The idea is it differentiates from paper cartridges often used in muzzle-loaders, especially rifle-muskets. – combustible paper wrapped around a bullet at one end and a powder charge on the other . The user ripped the end with the powder open, poured powder down the barrel, squeezed the bullet out of the other end and then rammed the paper down on top of the bullet as wadding . Then the user fished a percussion cap out of a cap box and placed it on the nipple, cocked and fired the rifle.

Fixed ammunition solved all that starting about 1864 with the .44 Henry Flat rim fire.

Title 18 United States Code Section 922 uses the term.

  5. Even way back when, they knew they needed to disarm the “other” and keep them disarmed; Indians, Slaves and former Slaves, Jews, Christian Armenians, the other African Tribe.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
