The Dremel Files: Shaping a Hogue Monogrip.

WARNING: Do not attempt on your own. I am a professional Screw Up trained to screw things up. This was just pure luck.

I bought a Smith & Wesson Model 65-2 several years ago. It was a police trade-off and right before gun prices decided to climb to Mount Everest and stay there. It came with the standard wooden grips that had the ergonomics of a splintered 2×4 and I could not get a damn good grip on the thing. Going cheap as I always do, I got myself a Hogue Monogrip for the revolver but still, I could not get a comfortable grip.
My hands have been defined as mutant: Chubby medium length fingers in what should be a large hands and sometimes getting something to feel comfortable is a pain in the knuckle. I eventually modified the Hogue to the point I now can get a grip on the revolver that feels just right and I don’t look like I am trying to play ping-pong with a fly swatter. I don’t shoot the revolver much so these dremel mods have taken a couple of years to do and because I was afraid of screwing up and confess to the wife I needed another grip.

Factory grip on the left. Modified on the right

The first modification was the “thumb rest.” (1) Although I call it a thumb rest, the actual reason for that shaving was that more times than not, a spent case would fail to come totally out of the cylinder because it would hit the grip. If you are just plinking, this is not a big problem, but it kinda screws up your attempts of fast reloads while shooting IDPA. The resting thumb part was a bonus and actually helped me with the “crossed thumbs” two hand grip.

Next was #3. That wedge there was as uncomfortable and a source of conflict between the ring finger and the pinkie to the point it was difficult to control recoil in a manner that allowed me to re-acquire the target faster. With a revolver’s need for a higher grip, the ring finger and the pinkie play a big part in controlling the recoil, at least for me.

Last was #2 and the one that took me the longest to figure out, but ten again I am not the brightest bulb in the Enterprise’s console. It was a subtle thing, mostly lack of comfort than anything else. I decided the deepening the groove might be what I was looking for and gave it a try. The reduction was very gradual but right after the first pass I felt that it was much more comfortable to handle. Three very soft passes later, the gun finally felt both comfortable and controllable. Some dry firing showed less wobbling.

Final word will be the range test sometime next week but I think I am going to be very satisfied. Now I have to figure out how to make the worked sections of the rubber grip look somehow good. Ideas are welcome.

The thrill of the chase? (Update)

Carjacking Suspect Shot by Victim in Hialeah: Cops | NBC 6 South Florida..

Police say a would-be carjacking ended with a twist in Hialeah Wednesday night when the victim turned the tables on the alleged suspect.

Some time before 10:30 p.m., officers say 41-year-old Orlando Garcia told them he was chasing someone who stole his car. The two caught up near 16th Avenue on Okeechobee Road, stepped out of cars, and got into a fight.

“There’s a confrontation between these two men,” said Hialeah Public Information Officer Eddie Rodriguez. “That’s when one man arms himself with a handgun and fires.”

I am all up for not letting a bad guy get away, specially if it is my stuff being stolen. But it is easy to get caught up with the thrill of the chase and the emotional need to feed one’s ego and not be smart about it. Follow, do not Chase.

Same event but from a different TV Station and a different point of view: WSVN-TV – Man shot after confrontation; shooter arrested.

I’ll keep an eye on this one. Might get interesting.

UPDATE: The car thief was booked for grand theft plus Hold for Immigration.  He was on parole for possession with intent to sell, burglary and resisting w/o violence. I have not been able to find anything on the car owner. The name is common in the Hispanic community, but there are no records of anybody arrested under that name that I could find. It does not mean he wasn’t arrested.

About the Aurora Theater, the Sikh Temple and the FRC shootings.

Aurora Theater: 12 dead, 58 injured.

Sikh Temple: 6 dead, 4 injured.

Family Research Council: No deaths, one injured.

Three similar shooting incidents but only one had a major body count. Why? In both the Sikh temple and the FRC, the shooter faced a counter attack that disrupted his plans. Satwant Singh Kaleka attacked Wade Michael Page with a knife and wounded him enough to send him back outside where police got a chance to shoot him. Floyd Lee Corkins II entered the Family Research Council and shot Security Officer Leo Johnson in the arm who jumped on him, disarmed him and held them for authorities.

At the Aurora Shooting, nobody attacked James Holmes who shot till he got tired or bored and waited for the cops to arrive and arrest him.

By  now it is clear that active shooters/ mass shooters/ whatever terminology are not the bravest or smartest and actually run on the coward side of the human race. Not only on these two cases but as shown in previous events such as the New Life Church, Appalachian School of Law, Trolley Square Mall, etc has shows that it takes one dedicated individual to stop what could have been a wholesale massacre, preferably armed.

But sure as hell you don’t solve anything hiding under a desk.

It comes a time you must be “cruel”

“If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day and will come back tomorrow expecting another one. Be an asshole, tell him to go learn how to fish.” Yours truly

From umbrellas to aspirin. From pens to first aid items, there is always that individual that somehow forgets to bring his own. We are not talking about a once in a lifetime occurrence or “Oh gosh, I never thought about this before” that brings knowledge and preparation for the future, but the “I can always ask/borrow Mr. X for it if I need some”  attitude.

I have officially become an asshole at work. Why? Because I stopped being “helpful” and providing for the fourth or fifth time a necessary item that somebody “forgot” for the umpteenth time. You cut your finger? See if you can top the bleeding with your fancy new smartphone, if not check the main office and use a Post-It to quench the spillage. If your car won’t start because the battery which has been giving you warnings for the last three days has finally call it quits, don’t come and ask me if I have jumper cables and to give you a jump, I’ll obviously lie to your face and say I don’t have any because my truck uses a Mr. Fusion to provide the necessary electricity. Can you borrow my flashlight to check that building? Wait, you work nights and have done so for the last 6 months, know that the flashlights at the office are always out and you still have failed to provide yourself with something so frigging basic? Sure, cough up $20 for batteries; my Surefire only uses classy & expensive lithium batteries. Don’t have the $20? Make sure you don’t bump into anything or anybody that might hurt you.

And please, if you gone stupid and decided to pick a fight with a suspected drunk and/or Meth freak after I told you not to do it, don’t expect me to risk my own limbs to get you out of your idiocy. You made that hospital bed all on your own, you get to lay in it. But I do promise I’ll be a good witness when LEOs arrive.

We cannot be 100% ready for what life may throw at you, we all agree on that. But that is not an excuse to be 0% ready and depend on good luck and the kindness of strangers and coworkers.  And if that makes me a nasty and cruel human being, just don’t hang around me, my tight budget will appreciate it.

DHS To Purchase Another 750 Million Rounds Of Ammo

Prison Planet.com » DHS To Purchase Another 750 Million Rounds Of Ammo.

I just placed my order for primers and bullets. If this order gets approved, prices of components will go up.

May have to drop by the gun store and get me some defensive ammo for the carry guns. It is that time of the year when you get to recycle your old loads.

And why DHS wants so much ammo? I really don’t know but I ain’t all warm fuzzy about it.
