Chris, the problem isn’t “savages”, it’s communists, and most people don’t understand that they can’t be accorded the old time/established conflict rules, since they don’t consider those not part of their ideology to be humans. That is NOT an exaggeration. EVERY time they take power, they kill MASSIVE numbers of people. Are you aware that the estimated death toll in totalitarian nations (mostly communists) in the 20th century, NOT counting actual war, runs over 150 MILLION of their OWN people?
Accepting defeat because you want to adhere to gentlemen’s rules, while your opponents DON’T HAVE ANY, is a truly stupid way to kill your family and nation. Communist don’t have any principals. Except to win at any cost. This is not a board game the West is engaged in, it is literally an existential threat scenario.
