(CNN)New Orleans Pelicans player Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot to death early Saturday in Dallas, with his agent saying it happened because the player mistakenly entered the wrong apartment.
A Dallas resident told police he heard someone enter his apartment by kicking open the front door, police spokesman DeMarquis Black said in a statement. The resident said “he called out to the individual, but was not answered,” and when the resident’s bedroom door was kicked open, the resident fired his gun, police said.Dejean-Jones collapsed in the breezeway, police said. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, Black said.

It was just a mistake. Hell I don’t use the keys to in my house, I just use a battering ram to open the door.
Police had no immediate response to Nichols’ comments.“There is no information that suggests the deceased Bryce Dejean-Jones knew the apartment resident, or was armed as he entered the apartment,” Black said.
The basketball player’s agent, Scott Nichols, said Dejean-Jones was in Dallas to visit his girlfriend for his daughter’s first birthday.
Thanks for that info on this whole thing going down at 3:20 AM. That little detail completely changes the story. My wife and I were talking about it, just reading the news trailer on TV. I’m reading that he kicked down the door and I’m saying what do you do when someone kicks down your door? Of course you think you need to defend yourself. If I were on a jury, I could never vote against someone defending themselves in that circumstance.
My wife is taking the viewpoint that if it’s where someone you know lives, you never kick down a door and of course I have to agree. I call them, or I call the landlord (it was an apartment); heck, I might even call the police if I really think the person I’m looking for is in there and might be hurt or something.
It goes from looking like a tragic mistake (guy enters wrong apartment) to looking like a crime that went wrong. As your friend said, it might have been worse if he had found the right apartment.
If he was really in town to visit his girlfriend and this is how he let himself into the apartment, this may just have been a rape/murder that was prevented.
I suspect there may have been some sort of drug or alcohol involved. In the past, I have heard stories of people coming home intoxicated and coming to the wrong door, getting frustrated over the key not working (because it’s the wrong door) and then breaking in to what they think is their own (or their friend’s) place.
I’m not discounting the alternative theory, just offering one that I’ve heard of happening. The drugs/alcohol/liquid courage goes a long way towards removing any inhibitions or reservations one might normally have about busting into someone’s place to teach them a lesson or whatever, also.
Let’s just say that I won’t be surprised when (not if) his toxicology screen comes back positive.

Except even in such situation one would not then continue in and proceed in kicking in interior doors as well…as happened here.
