CHICAGO—Touting the program’s convenience and affordability, Chicago officials unveiled Monday the city’s new gun-sharing service, “QuikShot,” which allows individuals to check out a loaded firearm for short periods of time.
The municipal initiative, through which users can rent semiautomatic pistols, shotguns, rifles, and submachine guns at more than 250 self-service kiosks, has reportedly been designed to make firepower easily available to residents and tourists alike nearly everywhere within the city limits.
“QuikShot lets anyone with a credit card walk up to one of our street-side firearm stations, select a gun, and head out into the Windy City fully armed in just a few seconds,” program director Arvind Reynolds told reporters, noting that borrowers can either rent their weapon for increments of 30 minutes or withdraw it for a full 24 hours if they plan on using it throughout the day.

I support this program fully if just to avoid the hassle of having to go through the hoops when checking in a gun in your luggage at the airports. Or if you need to send your gun to the smith for a trigger job? Rent a nice Kimber Custom or Nighthawk.  Test ride the latest Plastic Fantastic or go for the exotic and classics like a Colt Python.

    1. Some new marketing slogans for Kimber:
“Kimber: A malfunction drill in every mag!”
“You might get the rare one that actually works!”
“Kimber- keeping gunsmiths in business since we stopped making good ones.”
“Pay for the name; pay again to get the thing to work.”
      “Queen of the gun safe”
“The 1911 for people who don’t know much about 1911’s”

      1. My TLE 2 ticks along without any problems… but then again, I bought it used back in ’01 or so. Do more current ones have a rep?

        1. Oh, yeah. I saw the comments from people like Tam, or 10-8*, or others deep in the shooty world how Kimber has pretty much became an example of successful marketing at the expense of quality, and I was like, yeah, okay.

Then my buddy got a Kimber. That thing would not go three rounds without locking up hard. I have honestly never seen a worse performing gun.

*I was going to write Hilton Yam, but that would rhyme.

        2. Used and works means somebody else paid the gunsmith!

All kidding aside, Kimber is like a super high-end Taurus. If no guns from Taurus worked they wouldn’t be in business. Instead some work, some don’t, and you roll the dice every time you buy one.

I bet more Kimber work from the factory than Taurus, but at 3x the price, and compared to other guns at the same price point (that aren’t Para) buying Kimber seems awful foolish to me.

  1. Be nice to not have to fly with guns. Just go to Hertz, rent a Glock 19 for the week. Only hard part would be deciding whether to pay for the reload option, or just stop by Cabela’s and fill it up before you return it. “So how many cents a round if you guys reload it?”

  2. Background checks shouldn’t be a problem. Outside of the police, hardly anybody who carries in Chicago has had to put up with one of those.
