Today is the last day of the Florida Legislative Session, bar something totally off the cuff. We have two Pro Gun laws waiting for the Governor’s signature and this is usually where I take blogging easy for a couple of weeks before getting back to complain abut everything. This year is different.
About 5 or 6 weeks ago, we found out a big economic door was going to be slammed on us by the beginning of summer. The missus and I discussed it and we decided that our eventual plan to move in 5 years to be with the family was to be implemented now.
So we are leaving the Gunshine State and that means I will no longer be a Florida Blogger.
I have been living continuously longer in Florida than anywhere else, including Venezuela and I have been a Florida Gun Blogger for 13 years. I learned to shoot in Florida and became a Second Amendment supporter here. I have been through Tropical Storms and Hurricanes which is something I will not miss one bit and will have to leave behind some great people who will be truly missed.
The missus and I are both a bit apprehensive and elated at the same time. She missed her family and we both missed Tennessee. I personally missed Fall in the Volunteer state and I am looking forward to see the colors again. And, of course, I shall be bitching as good Floridian about winter coming so soon with temperatures dropping in the 60s by September, but think of it as material for future posts.
And I have to re-learn a new set of gun laws, and specially that GFZ signs do carry the weight of law in the Volunteer State. I think I will start with Andrew Branca’s Tennessee Self Defense Laws seminar for starters, but if somebody knows of the equivalent of Jon Gutmacker’s book for Tennessee, please let me know.
Our tentative date of departure is sometime mid July provided the house is sold fast which apparently will happen from what I have seen. And by the prices in the market, we will surely leave without any debts.
So, to all my Florida friends and readers: Thank you! It has been a helluva ride and enjoyed it a lot.

2) gfz signs must have specific wording and state the numerical law that allows private business to be a gfz. Basically, look for legalese and a bunch of numbers.

Have you seen the house prices?
Also….people are streaming in from all over and paying cash with 14-day closes.
We’re kinda-sorta looking at acreage but we can’t get anything because practically no seller will accept any kind of contingency, like selling your old house. Some won’t even accept a financing contingency, meaning that if you don’t have cash your offer won’t even be considered. In my sleepy little town houses are going for 105%-110% of asking price and closing within 15 days of listing.
Its like that even an hour outside Nashville.
But I’m glad you’re coming. Many beers shall be had.
Also, I’ll get you in to the guntry club. 1250 yard rifle range, a gazillion pistol bays, and even a 360-degree bay 🙂
I want to eventually do a Blog shoot. I guess it will be next year after it warms up.
I am trying to wrap my head about the fact that the best shooting months are no longer from January to March.
Here in once-rural East TN, a big developer is snapping up most of the largish parcels that come on the market and creating subdivisions. The houses seem to sell as soon as they’re built. Kinda crazy. I hope the newcomers assimilate, and don’t try to turn Sevier County into NYC-only-with-big-lawns.
Prices are cheap and the population sparse compared to Silicon Valley… but compared to right here two years ago when we bought the place, prices have gone nuts and the neighborhood is starting to look downright crowded. Which, I guess, makes our property a good long-term investment.
You don’t wanna know how stupid real state prices have gone up down here.
We’re in East TN, a bit East of Insty. Once we’re back to traveling (we currently have constraints other than the Pestilence), we’ll be occasionally visiting other parts of the state, and elsewhere. Nashville area is on the travel list.
Are you going to be anywhere near Oleg? (Yeah, we seriously owe him a visit.)
A friend of mine knows Oleg and has promised we will go drop on him. Apparently he is near enough 🙂
I’m envious. I only know Oleg from his work and one or two emails, but he’s high on my list of people I want to meet at some point.

Big move switching states like that. I just did it 7 months ago, going from Joliet, IL to Columbia SC. Definite learning curve. May you roll with the changes and find a new Orangy in the woods. We also looked in TN but decided we got more bang for our buck house-wise here.
Dang, Miguel! I guess overall I’ve got to send congratulations and be happy for you. With one kid here in Central Florida and one in Indiana, I always thought Tennessee would be a good halfway point to live. Somewhere around Chattanooga is about 9 hours drive time from here and seven from the other end. Depending on lots. Northern Alabama or Georgia are possible, too.
Aside from being insanely busy with the move, there’s no reason to stop the blog. You’ll just be centered on Tennessee politics instead of Florida.
