Person 1: “I am sick. Newfangled Medicine is giving me sweat, shitters and blinding headaches.”
Person 2: “I am also taking Newfangled Medicine and getting that plus dizziness so bad I can barely drive.”
Me: “You should stop taking it and call your doctor for an alternative. Get rid of that stuff.”
Person 1: ” I paid for that stuff! I have to finish the 3-month prescription I have!”
Person 2: “It is not like money grows on trees; you know? That would be wasting it.”
Me: “Oh man, look at the time! I am late for the meeting.

And these one of a hundred reasons why I do not mingle with coworkers after the day is over or make friendships. It will either end up in an situation where I end up questioning loudly their mental capacity (and a free trip to HR) or I sever my tongue altogether with my teeth.

  1. “This place’s food is always bad!”
“I know, and the portions are so small!”
    .
I hear you. On the other hand, there can be good ones. A couple of weeks after I started current job, a guy pretty high up in the local division’s administration asked when (not if) we were going to head to the range.

  2. I was on metformin, for blood sugar. I didn’t like what did to me. I told my doc i wanted off it. She immediately suggested 2 different prescription drugs whose side effect were WORSE. So I did my own research (imagine that) and I no longer take that nasty drug… when asked I will lie and say no, i just decided to stay on it… it is amazing the number of “smart” people who blindly follow doctors right around and down the death spiral…
    America IS amazingly stupid…

    1. I had side effects from Metformin, but my doctor fixed my stupid by telling me to split the dose and take half in the morning and half in the evening. Otherwise, it just takes a little time to be able to tolerate it.

If your blood sugar is OK without it, great, but all medications have an adjustment time.

    2. Also Doctors are sadly turning into sponsored medication dispensers.
The only reasons I went to a doctor in the last decade is because I needed a slip for work stating that I was sick and for some standard tests, thankfully, and only twice for small injuries (splinter in the eye and deep cut on a finger) but even then the doctor failed to properly dress the finger wound so I had to redress it on my own.

  3. Gotta love the prescription ads.
On one hand, it is the best thing you can take. On the other, side effects include dizziness, cannibalism, flushing, spontaneous human combustion, and turning into an orthodox Jewish Rabbi for an afternoon.

I also saw a headline a few months ago. Most of these new drugs are, basically useless. The promised benefits never seem to materialize in most people. It is looking more and more like the drug companies are selling drugs based on the far end of the ball curve.

    1. But well established (i.e. out of patent protection) that work broadly, don’t bring in the big bucks.

So … what’s a big pharmacorp to do?

  4. My first manager/VP out of college had a hard and fast rule. He never socialized with anyone outside of work. I knew nothing about him outside of what I saw of him at work until I went to his funeral about 6-7 years after I left that job. Someone asked him why he never socialized outside of work (never even went to the company Christmas parties), he said “I don’t want to be friends with people I might have to fire.”
    .
Im not a manager no do I have to fire anyone, but I understand exactly why he was the way he was with regards to having that firewall between work and home as I’ve gotten older. I’m friendly with my coworkers and have been social outside of work (especially as some of them were actually friends before we worked together), but work and home stay wholly separate now. Thanks for the early lesson, bossman.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
