This was more or less a short exchange with another Venezuelan in Twitter. It seems that some enterprising souls were prepared or had the smarts to create charging station for smart phones and are charging $1 in cash money (no local currency US tender only) so you could charge your phone. This has not sat well with many down there.

-“People charging $1 to let people charge their phones are motherfuckers.”
-“So, Socialism sucks, but those charging for a service are motherfuckers?”
-“I mean like in a situation we are living right now.”
-“OK! So you want Socialism or Capitalism at your convenience.”

Although the outage has gone for almost four days, a new record, this does not mean that Venezuela had not had outages before. They had plenty but they were called “electricity rationing” so there is no excuse to be caught with your undies down. Besides, it is not like this major collapse of the electrical grid was not forecasted, it was at least 4-5 years ago. The surprise resides in that it took this long for the whole house of cards to come down.

If you are lazy and do not prepare, you either do without it or pay for it. Why should you benefit for free because others were prepared for the eventuality and you did not?

  1. People are scavenging garbage for food, but can spare the time time and effort to bitch (on a cell phone) about someone getting $1 U.S. to charge their cell phone. I think if I had a dollar, I’d buy food on the black market vice charging a cell phone to tweet about how bad the people are that offer charging services.

    1. I agree. If the folks charging a buck for a cell phone charge are parasites (paraphrasing from the correspondent’s turn of phrase), then a reasonable sanction is to NOT GIVE THEM THE FREAKING DOLLAR, and go charge you phone somewhere else. Or something.
