. . not if you break the drm on the Amazon book(s) download them via pc and side load them using calibre. my kindle is perpetually in airplane mode

Generally, if I want to make sure I own it, I’ll buy it in paper. Otherwise I tend to look at it as a long-term rental.

This has been done before, very nicely in a form that allows the content to be scanned and converted back to computer files efficiently. The first one I know of is the source code for the PGP encryption program back in the 1970s, when the government attempted to use ITAR to suppress public access to good encryption. The second one is the design for a DES encryption breaking machine: https://www.amazon.com/Cracking-Secrets-Encryption-Research-Politics/dp/1565925203/ref=sr_1_4 — and anyone who wants to can copy the “how to make it easy to convert back to files” machinery from that book since it was put into the public domain.
