Remember Pearl Harbor (75th Anniversary)

This is from last year, but I find it more touching than anything else I can come up with now.

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13: 12-13

  1. Jackie and I went to Hawaii in September. A former Chief Naval Aviation Pilot was there, having been there 75 years ago as a PBY crewman.

The gravel in his voice talking about watching his “boats” get blowed up and sunk and then the icey tone when he said “yeah, and then Bill Halsey chased them back to Yokohama and we did his Scouting” was something hard to put into words.

  2. My dad was there. Afterwards, until September 1945, he tried to sink as many Japanese ships as possible (as part of the ship’s company, of course). Did quite well, also. Hawaii, Australia, Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Many things he saw he would not talk about until 40 years later. When he did, I gained a new perspective and also profound respect for him.
When I was at Pearl Harbor in the early ’90’s, I stood at the base fence, as close as I could get to the pier where his ship was during the attack. When I told him about it, I could see that he was proud that I was proud.
Guys, if you ever go to Hawaii, you MUST go to the Arizona memorial, and also to the submarine memorial. It is sobering just to be there.
