  1. BAR: 20 round mag, 500 rpm, fired M2 ball (151 gr at 2,750 fps = 2,535 ft-lbs).
    Total energy = 50,707 ft-lbs per mag.

    M-16: 30 round mag, 700 rpm, firing M193 ball (55 gr at 3,150 fps = 1,210 ft-lbs).
    Total energy = 36,300 ft-lbs per mag.

This guy is a dumb-ass and a liar.

  2. SAAMI Spec max pressure for 30-06: 60,000 psi

SAAMI Spec max pressure for 223 Rem: 55,000 psi

WWII military M2 ball would have been a little lower pressure as WWII powder was less efficient and 5.56 did have a newer style of powder which improved the ballistics with the smaller case capacity. But that’s not going to be way off from the SAAMI spec.

If you assume any civilian shooter is just going to buy ammo at Wal-Mart and not surplus stuff, than the SAAMI specs cover that. The 5.56 is not much higher pressure, it’s about the same or lower.

    1. I don’t have the numbers at hand right now, but the 5.56 is higher pressure than the .223. It’s backwards from 7.62×51/.308 Win.

  3. Ah, I think I’m finally getting it.

I always wondered who exactly the dumb-asses were that hung around the gun store spewing their bs. I always wondered what kind of moron couldn’t follow four simple rules and not endanger himself or others. I always wondered about the idiots that believed the merest scratch with a .45 was going to knock a guy ten feet backwards and tear limbs off. Or people who believed a .22 had almost as much energy a .308

“You fools think progressives don’t shoot”

    Now I get it.

Progressives. Who already know everything and need to learn nothing.

  4. To paraphrase Rothbard, “It is no crime to be ignorant of ballistics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.’ But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on ballistic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.”

  5. I like the repeated references to “Old” and equating it to/tying it in with “slow”, implying useless.

May I remind all and sundry of Samuel Whittemore, who, at age 78 killed three of the British Army relief column approaching Lexington Mass. (of “Shot heard ’round the world” fame), was overpowered, shot in the face, bayoneted several times, and left for dead. When the colonial forces found him, he was reported to be trying to reload his musket, so that he could attack (and presumably kill) MORE British Soldiers.

So Mr. “Progressive Shooter” perhaps ought to (a) learn whereof he speaks, and (b) think through that entire “old and slow equals useless/helpless” thing.

One of us old , slow guys hay provide a lesson on presumption and false assumptions.

I hope not, but, then again, ya know….

    1. My 3 year old uses “old” as a synonym for broken. We’re working on correcting the kid, and after a week he’s getting better.

I would hope someone who is supposedly an adult would be less ignorant, but apparently not.
