The guy could have backed away or otherwise disengaged.
Depending on where this was, the defender is liable to be charged with shooting an unarmed moron.
A longer video shows a much longer retreat and the shot only happened after the attacker showed knife.
It is always a question of how far you have to retreat on a moral level.
