This is a parable of two brothers.

One brother is a Conservative, the other is a Liberal.

The Conservative Brother works in the firearms industry, the Liberal Brother works for a brewery.

At dinner one night, the brothers get into a fight over politics.

The Liberal Brother says that there are too many gun deaths in America.  Nobody should have the right to buy a “military style assault rifle” or a handgun and that people should be 21 and have a license to buy a gun.

The Conservative Brother says “that would hurt my employer badly, and might even cost me my job.”

The Liberal Brother says “so what, too many people are dying because of guns.”

The Conservative Brother says “You are right, there are a lot of gun deaths in the US.  About 37,000 per year, but most of them, about 24,000 are suicides, only 12,000 or so are homicides.  In contrast, there are 88,000 alcohol related deaths every year, which is more than double the number of gun deaths.  More than 10,000 of those deaths are DUI related so include people who were not drinking.  If you believe a company is responsible for how people use their products, your industry kills far more people than mine, and just about the  same number of innocents.  Furthermore, you have argued that blue laws are obsolete and stupid, it shouldn’t require a license to be a distiller, and the drinking age should be lowered to 18 because the Europeans have a better culture of teaching responsible drinking at a younger age than we do.  Everything you want to impose on my employer, you are trying to get your employer out from under.”

The Liberal Brother responds with a lot of swearing and leaves the room and slams the door behind him.

There hasn’t been a family dinner since.

  1. Pretty simple really…

Drugs and/or alcohol can be used by the government to control the masses.
Guns can be used by the masses to control the government.
