New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern announces ban on “military-style” semi-automatic weapons

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced an immediate ban Thursday on sales of “military-style” semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines in the wake of a terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch that killed 50 worshippers. Ardern said the sales ban was effective immediately to prevent stockpiling and would be followed by a complete ban on the weapons after new laws were rushed through.

She said people could hand over their guns under an amnesty while officials develop a formal buyback scheme, which could cost up to 200 million New Zealand dollars ($140 million).

“Every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned,” she said.

The ban includes any semi-automatic guns or shotguns that are capable of being used with a detachable magazine that holds more than five rounds. It also extends to accessories used to convert guns into what the government called “military-style” weapons.

So New Zealand is implementing an semi-auto ban and buyback.

I have to say, the only thing shocking about this is that it exempts semi auto 22 rifles and pump action shotguns, which Australia does not.

Polly Collins, 64, of Christchurch, was thrilled to hear of Ardern’s announcement as she visited a flower memorial for the victims.

“The prime minister is amazing,” she said. “It’s not like in America, where they have all these things and then they go ‘Oh yeah, we’ll deal with the gun laws,’ and nothing’s done.”

Suck my ass you commonwealth subject of the Crown.  Want me to lose any sympathy I have for your country?  Use your tragedy to attack the rights enshrined in our Constitution.  Currently your country is jailing people for possessing a video.  Never let the word freedom escape your lips when describing your own country.

As for the United States, Senator Bernie Sanders, who is the pack leader for 2020 Presidential candidates responded to the news from New Zealand this way.

This is exactly why we have a House of Representatives, a Senate, the President, and a Bill of Rights.  Our Founding Fathers were wise men and wanted to make it as difficult as possible for some politician with aspirations of despotism to strip people of their freedom with ease.

That some Soviet loving, Castro fellating, Communist bastard thinks it’s a great idea to strip Americans of their rights because of a handful of criminals is exactly why said Commie bastard shouldn’t be in office.

The difficulty we have banning assault weapons is a feature, not a bug, of our system.  They want to turn it around so the feature is their ability to “do something” while your freedoms are the bug.

  1. If you have actually seen the video of the attack, it should be very easy to conclude that just about any firearm would have had similar results. Those poor people were huddled into corners and the guy just shot into a huddle of people indescriminately for the most part then had the time to durdle around delivering leisurely head shots. I don’t think a different gun being used would have made much of a difference because of this fact, pass throughs would have still happened. The time he spent would have still happened.

I’d like to know more about the guy that successfully tackled him and got supremely unlucky. Haven’t heard a but about that in mainstream media. No discussion of the tactics used or the time he spent unhindered. Just go right for the low hanging fruit of the gun.

    1. The WSJ quoted the police patting themselves on the back for their fast response — 36 minutes. In a big city. I think our village police force, both of them, can respond faster than that.
