On the dangers of fireworks

I posted this video earlier:

In Minnesota over the 4th of July, an 18-year-old was killed when a firework went off in his face.

In Indiana, an 11-year-old was also killed by a firework.

The fatalities were caused by large mortar style fireworks.

The big mortars, which are intended to launch an explosive payload a few hundred feet into the air, detonate with significant force.

Any firework capable of sending sparks a hundred feet or more can be lethal if it goes of next to a person’s head.

In the video above, a man can be seen laughing a mortar firework at people.

This is tantamount to firing an M203 at someone.

The lethal effective blast radius might be a bit smaller but having a mortar firework detonate next to a foot or hand will result in an amputation, and can cause loss of eyes if it detonate near the face.

IANAL, however I think there is sufficient evidence to justify returning fire in jurisdictions where self defense is allowed, if someone launches fireworks at you.

It will be an interesting case if it were to happen.

Make sure you have hand and eye trauma surgeons as your expert witnesses to describe what sorts of injuries fireworks can cause.

They definitely qualify as “grievous bodily harm.”

They have technicals in Minneapolis now

The Wokewashing of the slave trade

This bullshit is trending on Twitter:

How could the Wokies not love the shit out of this movie?

It has proud Black African women fighting and killing lots of White European men.

It’s Woke porn in theater across America.

Actual, factual, real life Wakanda!

Except it’s not.

The real African nation of Dahome was an empire built on conquest and slavery.

The Kingdom of Dahomey was established in the 1720s. Dahomey was built on the slave trade; kings used profits from the slave trade to acquire guns, which in turn were used to expand their kingdom by conquest and incorporation of smaller kingdoms. Most slaves were acquired either by trade with the interior or by raids into the north and west into Nigeria; Dahomey took advantage of the civil wars among the Yoruba to gain access to a ready source of captives.

They didn’t fight Europeans until late in their empire, and when they did, they lost.

Earlier, Dahome conquered neighboring tribes and sold them into slavery to European traders.

They also engaged in an annual rutual known as the Yearly Custom, which involved ritualistic human sacrifice.

His Majesty Badahung, King of Dahomey, is about to make the ‘Grand Custom in honour of the late King Gezo. Determined to surpass all former monarchs in the magnitude of the cere- monies to be performed on this occasion, Badahung has made the most extensive preparations for the celebration of the Grand Custom. A great pit has been dug, which is to contain human blood enough to float a canoe. Two thousand persons will be sacrificed on this occasion. The expedition to Abbeokuta is postponed, hut the King has sent his army to make some excursions at the expense of some weaker tribes, and has succeeded in capturing many unfortunate creatures. The young-people among these prisoners will be sold into slavery, and the old persons will be killed at the Grand Custom.

It wasn’t only the victims of conquest who were sacrificed.

The guide continues in saying that when the king dies his wives are meant to die with him. The temple, in which I’m allowed walk around, is the tomb of the former king’s wives. While he is said to have had as many as 200 wives, when he died they decided to sacrifice 41 of them to the afterlife. They were lowered into the basin of the temple, drank a glass of poison and died there below where my feet now stand.

Even Dahome soldiers were not spared.

Casually, she points at the costume of a man holding a saber She explains that this was the executioner, and that he may have had the most stressful job in the world. If he didn’t cut the head of the enemy clean off in one single chop, he himself would have his head removed as punishment. Soldiers also had to live by high standards. Prior to leaving to fight they were to promise to return with a certain number of heads. If they came back with even one short, they had to give their own to make up the difference.

When the British outlawed slavery, the British navy patrolled the slave coast to force an embargo on slave ports.

This significantly weakened the economy and prowess of Dahome.

It was eventually conquered by the French, much to the support of other local tribes.

The best parallel in America is the Aztec empire built of slavery and sacrifice, and how the Conquistadors were seen as liberators by the tribes preyed upon by the Aztec.

But the story of an African nation built on slavery and sacrifice that sold its Black neighbors to White European slave traders until it was conquered by the French wouldn’t have the same appeal.

So they rewrite the entire history of Dahomey to focus on the female warriors and make up the rest.

So brace yourself for bombardment about a movie about “real life Wakanda” which is as fictional as Wakanda.

Maybe I should Kickstarter a sequel about the heroes of the British Navy that battled African slave traders?

Twisting the violence knob over Dobbs

Last month, a man used the protests outside the home of Justice Brett Kavanagh to attempt the kidnapping and murder of the Justice.

The protests were supported by the White House, which barely condemned the attempted murder.

It makes perfect sense then that Justice Kavanagh would be extra cautious about protesters in close proximity.

On Wednesday, a Leftist group Shutdown DC arranged a protest at the Morton’s steakhouse where Kavanagh was having dinner.  Justice Kavanagh and his security detail quietly left out the back of the restaurant.

The Left has been mocking him ceaselessly since then.

Much like the “Trump hid in a bunker” story after violent protesters started setting fired outside the White House, the Left loves to threaten the Right with violence then mock them and call them cowards when they retreat to safety.

Morton’s released a statement condemning the protest of Justice Kavanagh in their restaurant.

Morton’s was operating under the old rules of DC.

DC was always a place of high political tension, however it was sort of a neutral ground.  Because both sides had a presence there, restaurants, hotels, businesses, were non-partisan.  Everyone needed to eat, everyone needed to host fundraisers, you could fight somewhere else, but the restaurant was neutral territory.  Two Senators who spent all day yelling at each other in Congress and attacking each other on TV could sit at tables next to each other that night and it was peaceful.

That was then, now that rule no longer exists.

The Left broke it.

Everywhere is fair game to attack the Right.  There is no more neutral territory.

Any business that holds to the old rules must be destroyed.

Morton’s is not being besieged with fake reservations.  People holding tables then pulling a no-show, which deprives the restaurant of customers.  The Left will try and bankrupt Morton’s because it wanted its guests to have a peaceful dinner.

Now Shutdown DC is offering a bounty to working class restaurant employees and anyone else who spots a conservative Justice for harassment.

Once again, twisting the violence knob.

The Left didn’t like the decision the Court came to.  Rather than focus on Legislation to address it, they will focus on retribution through harassment and intimidation.

The message being “don’t make another decision we won’t like.”

The dangerous wasteful incompetence of Charlotte schools

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools the public school system for Mecklenburg County, it is the second-largest school district in North Carolina and the eighteenth-largest in the nation, with over 147,000 students enrolled.

Mecklenburg County is deep blue, with a fully Democrat board of county  commissioners, it went 67% for Biden.

So let us look at how they manage their school system.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools auction for almost 46,000 clear backpacks launched Friday

Charlotte-Mecklenburg School began its public auction of almost 46,000 clear backpacks Friday morning.

Starting bid for the lot of 45,980 is $50,000 with $1,000 increments accepted.

District documents from June listed the backpacks as surplus property.

CMS spent nearly $442,000 for about 46,000 clear backpacks in November, WBTV previously reported.

In March, CMS officials told parents in an email that they discovered most backpacks contained a warning tag required by Proposition 65 for California residents. They immediately paused the rollout of the bags.

District leaders initially ordered these clear backpacks for security reasons after incidents of guns and other weapons being found in backpacks.

At least 30 guns were found on CMS campuses during the 2021-22 school year.

The Proposition 65 warning is the biggest bunch of bullshit ever.  It is supposed to warn you that a product contains a chemical that is a known carcinogen.  Except there is no standard for dosage, exposure, etc., to be exempt in the labeling.  So just about every product you buy has a Prop 65 warning on it.  Only people who have no understand of risk assessment would panic over a Prop 65 warning on a backpack.

Coincidentally, the same county that panicked over Prop 65 warnings on backpacks also was one of the last counties to hang onto mask mandates, and still had masking in schools after that.

But that is a minor point.

Let’s focus on the big issue.

CMS went to clear backpacks because students were found with guns in their backpacks on school grounds.  What has CMS done about that?

What happens to students caught bringing guns to Mecklenburg County schools?

Authorities found 30 firearms on CMS campuses during the 2021-2022 school year, up from a previous high of 22 in 2018-2019. Most of those weapons were recovered in the first half of the year, causing a swift backlash. The Charlotte Observer last week reported that CMS’ gun problem is nothing new. Between 2010 and 2021, Mecklenburg County schools reported 323 firearm complaints filed against Mecklenburg County students younger than 18, by far the most of any North Carolina county in that span.

The school district and police have declined to describe this in detail. But state data gives some clues.

It shows that nearly one-third of school-based firearm complaints don’t go to court. Data obtained by The Observer from the Department of Public Safety show that 68% of these complaints ended up in juvenile court. Another 16% of cases were dismissed, while 16% of cases were diverted, typically meaning the kid was required to complete an action plan or community service instead of going to court.

On a per-student basis, Mecklenburg County schools were in the state’s top 10 of firearm offenses between 2010 and 2021, joined by only much smaller school districts, according to the state. After 23 guns were found in the first half of this school year, CMS ramped up up efforts to prevent guns from being carried on school grounds, adding body scanners and launching an anonymous reporting app.

Youth violence experts say that it’s important for school districts and state officials to work with people and organizations in the community to get the best results for such kids.

“You want to look at some of the outcomes like suspensions,” said Paul Smokowski, a violence-prevention researcher and founder of the North Carolina Youth Violence Prevention Center. “A suspension is a punitive discipline and it shows the level of problems that a school might be having. If they have more troubles they have to deal with, they often get more punitive.”

Smokowski said he’s seen decrease in problems when school districts and Juvenile Justice focus on “fostering community, fostering good connections with students and positive behavior.”

If that last part reminds you of something, it’s probably because it sounds a lot like what Broward County Schools did before Parkland.

CMS has the most problems with students bringing guns to school in the state.  They tackled that problem in inadequate punishment and diversionary programs that sent a message to students that bringing guns to school wasn’t a big deal.

They further responded with body scanners and then buying nearly half a million dollars worth of clear backpacks, that they didn’t give out because of the bullshit California Prop 65 warning label.

That is how Democrat monopolies run things.

They exacerbated a crime problem with soft of crime policies, applied a collective punishment with clear backpacks, did a terrible job of risk assessment, then pissed a bunch of money away.

I’ve never been so glad to have bought outside of Mecklenburg County.
