An assailant with a knife attacked and wounded several people in a central square in the southwestern German city of Mannheim on Friday, police said.
Officers shot at the attacker, who was also injured.
Euronews understands that German far-right activist and anti-Islam critic Michael Stürzenberger was injured in the attack while taking part in a Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa (BPE) party rally, of which Stürzenberger is a member.

One person attacked several others with a knife, injuring them, at 11:35 (10:35 BST), police said in a follow-up statement.
A firearm was then used against the attacker, it added.
The attack is understood to have happened at the same time as a rally in the market square hosted by far-right anti-Islam activist Michael Stürzenberger.
His organisation, the Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa (BPE), confirmed to Bild newspaper that Mr Stürzenberger had been injured in the attack.

Sorry Media, but no matter how you slant it, the attacker (Probably a Mennonite or Quaker) sort of proved the points Stürzenberger has been making.

Politics aside, notice the placement of the stabs: some were the closest body part available, and others were targeted for maximum bodily harm/death.

No sympathy for his injuries over here.

I don’t intend to “Monday Morning Quarterback” his timing — it’s fully possible he didn’t have a clear shot until then — but it does seem oddly convenient that out of everyone the stabber took a swing at, he didn’t pull the trigger until that knife was at the neck of another cop.

And I have no doubt it would have ended much sooner if one (or more) of the private citizens there were armed, instead of having to wait for the cops.
There are stereo types for a reason.
What no, non-lethal options, like a taser? Should have been engaged with deadly force immediately after first victim was stabbed and crazed individual still possessed weapon. Apparent lack of training to deal with this type of situation and/or fearful of government repercussions for shooting suspect?
Tasers are not in use by normal cops in Germany because what happens when a pregnant women with a sick heart attacks the cop and he uses the taser and the attacker dies?
Not kidding. That is more or less the reasoning behind not using tasers.
SEK (think SWAT) and other special units use them.

Well, remember this is in Europe, where cops are even less competent with firearms than here. It’s the place where “firing warning shots” is SOP — meaning launching bullets over the heads of the crowd, to land god knows where.
Yeah…. not true. Most of the times only a handful rounds are fired and nearly all connect.
On the other hand German Police is incredible restraint in its use of the firearm.
The difference is: the cops that are using their firearm are the cops that are proficient in their use, sometimes civilian shooters. The cops that have no clue how to use their pistol also won’t use it and rather retreat.
