NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – A 21-year-old man was shot and killed during or after a big party at an Airbnb in East Nashville late Thursday night, Metro Police said.

Police said at least four people were shot at 210 North Ninth Street. Police confirmed the man killed in the shooting was 21-year-old Robert D. Howard, who was found dead at the scene.

I understand the appeal of Airbnbs: Cheap, conveniently easy to rent and more “private” than your hotel room and lacks the control a hotel chain would have over your behavior and less hidden charges. And I am sure that 99% of all parties held in locations like this are without incident other than a pissed off neighbor complaining about the noise.

But bad stuff will happen if a party goes out of control and for some reason, incident s in these rentals seem to be on the rise. Any “house” part will attract the less than desirables which may lead to somebody taking a trip to the morgue.

The other thing that bothers me about Airbnbs is lock security. Hotel locks get (or should) automatically reprogrammed every time a guest’s check-out time is reached but I doubt that very expensive hotel system is applied to short-term rentals. So, unless the owner has a new digital lock with a keypad and bothers to change it after every rental, you are talking about standard hard keys for a lock I doubt pretty much it will be changed which means any previous occupant could have made a duplicate. And that ain’t kosher in my book of paranoia.

If I am forced to stay at one for more than one night, I’ll observe the locks installed and make a beeline to the nearest home improvement store, buy a couple of lock cylinders and change them just in case

Anyway, I will add Airbnbs to the list of “Stupid Places.”

  1. Money ain’t morals or manners. But in today’s society, $$$$ trumps right and wrong all day long. It is our new grail. It is our only grail.

VRBO AND AIR BNB are big time magnets for bad folks and bad things.

Those renters are arguably accountable BUT ONLY via suit against the “owner”/ landlord and then after protracted and expensive legal action.

    Ask me how I know…

FN legal system. Designed by lawyers for lawyers. Specifically designed to part you and me from our hard earned money.

    FN sumbitches.

  2. We’ve stayed in a couple as vacation rentals. Every one has had electronic locks on the front door, and that was the number we were given to enter. They all looked like internet connected devices, so changing the code would be trivial. Most of the owners/managers really have no interest in meeting you there physically.

One did require photos of us. That probably opens them to civil rights complaints if they ever discriminate against a protected class, but they did it anyway.

Of course, I could easily have changed a cylinder or sabotaged any of the other door locks and that would probably have gone undetected.
