They were planning on resisting the cops, but forgot their toys. Most of the stuff in the “Urgent” list are things they use in their first level of violence, like low grade body armor and strobe lights. I’m reminded of the 1979 “Greensboro massacre” in which the Communist Worker’s Party decided to take on the KKK. The CWP decided to have a “Death to the Klan” march in Greensboro, NC. The KKK and American Nazi Part decided to have a counter demonstration. Both announced ahead of time.

The Communist Worker’s Party decided they wanted to rough it up a bit, so they used two by fours to hold their banners to use as bludgeons once things got spicy. When the KKK showed up, the CWP members started flailing on the cars of the KKK folk with the two by fours and started banging on the KKK people as well. It was a classic case of taking a two by four to a gunfight. The KKK responded by firing at the CWP. Some CWP people had handguns, and returned fire, but the KKK had brought rifles as well. In the end, five CWP people were killed and nine others wounded. One KKK guy was wounded. Handguns against rifles, and old story. In the resulting trials, the KKK members who were arrested were acquitted on the grounds of self defense. There was also a civil trial in which some of the KKK members were found liable for killing a non-CWP person.

I started working in NC a few years later, and I saw videos of the altercation as part of my training. The CWP folk clearly wanted a fight, but had no clue what they were getting into. As I’ve watched these protesters with their Rubbermaid shields and bicycle helmets, I keep thinking of the tactical result that will happen when they finally run into some people who are ready for serious violence. These people aren’t quite LARPing, but they are close to it. Eventually they will run into people who won’t play nicely.
I can understand why antisemite terrorist supporters would want to avoid bagels, but “no bananas”???
