Eulalio Tordil, the Perfect (and deadly) Storm of Gun Control inefficiency.

Moms Demand Eulalio Tordil

A Law Enforcement Officer (The Only Ones) with a restraining order for domestic violence had his duty gun removed and his personal weapons confiscated by police in a state with great Gun Control Laws which would not have him allowed to buy any more weapons. All the check boxes have been marked and therefore no violence would occur. The wife was supposed to be safe and no need to do other preparations. It was a guarantee that the Opposition has made over and over.

But the sad fact is that three people are dead and three more wounded at the hands of Eulalio Tordil. This “Mass Shooting” has barely been mentioned by Moms Demand and CSGV and not a peep from Everytown or the Bradys. It is an embarrassment and they know it.

Words printed in a piece of paper are no substitute for the ability to defend oneself against a determined attacker.

Those Handy Carbines – Sheriff Jim Wilson

Another carbine that I have always liked is the Ruger Mini-14. While it has always had a good reputation for reliability, some have felt that the Ruger was not as accurate as it should have been. That always seemed odd to me because the ones that I owned and shot were certainly comparable, accuracy-wise, to the Model 94 Winchester and the .30 M1 Carbine. None of those three would win Honorable Mention at Camp Perry but they have won an awfully lot of gunfights.

And here is the question: What constitutes a Fighting Weapon? I go by two principles, reliability (it won’t fail on its own) and “shootability” (The weapon you shoot the best because you feel comfortable with it.)

Comments are open. What would your principles/rules be for a Fighting Weapon?

2016 Gun Rights Policy Conference in Tampa.

GRPC 2016

Come meet national gun rights leaders and your fellow grassroots activists at the 31st Annual Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC 2016) in Tampa, Florida at the DoubleTree by Hilton on September 23, 24, & 25, 2016. This is your once-a-year chance to network, get an insider look and plan pro-gun rights strategies for the coming year. Past GRPCs have outlined victory plans and made public the latest firearms trends. They allow you a first-hand chance to hear movement leaders–and make your voice heard. This year we’ll take a look at critical issues such as: city gun bans, “smart” guns, concealed carry, federal legislation, legal actions, gun show regulation and state and local activity. The full roster of GRPC 2016 speakers has not yet been set. Past speakers include: Alan M. Gottlieb, Joseph P. Tartaro, Eugene Volokh, Wayne LaPierre, Michael Reagan, Larry Elder, Rep. Bob Barr, John Lott, Mark Walters, Sandy Froman, Rick Patterson, Gene Hoffman, Tim Schmidt, AWR Hawkins, Massad Ayoob, Tom Gresham, Alan Gura, G. Gordon Liddy, Larry Pratt, Emily Miller and many other.
The Boss and myself will be attending all day Saturday. One quick note for fellow Floridians, specially those of the Southern flavor :IT IS FREE. You only need to pre-register and show up. Most people decide to book at the hotel so there is no driving to be done which comes handy if you happen to attend the post-conference Saturday night Podcaster get-together. Paul Lathrop and Sean Sorrentino will bring their equipment and record the degustation of spirits and slow descent into silliness. I’ll be playing the role of designated wrangler and the wife will keep me in check.
Let’s see how many South Florida Bloggers and readers can crash the Podcasters’ party!

Jacksonville, Fl — The Jacksonville gun advocate who was shot in the back by her four-year-old son will likely avoid criminal prosecution. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office had recommended a misdemeanor charge against 31-year-old Jamie Gilt. Investigators say she was driving in Putnam County with her gun in the front seat, but it slid to the back, where her son was able to grab it and shoot. Deputies had recommended a charge of unsafe storage of a firearm.

The State Attorney’s Office now confirms Gilt has entered in to a Deferred Prosecution Agreement for that charge, which will allow her to avoid adjudication as long as the terms of the agreement are completed.

The agreement says Gilt has to complete a gun safety course, prove installation of a new mounted holster in her vehicle, prove safe storage in her home, and give ten speeches relating to the incident and the need to safely secure firearms. The agreement says she has 90 days to complete these terms from when the agreement was filed, May 2nd. If she complies, the charge will be dismissed.

First, Florida statutes 790.174 does cover unsafe storage and it is a misdemeanor of the second degree. The penalty would have been a maximum of $500 and sixty days in jail. No prison time. And yes, she does keep her guns and CWP.

I do believe the deal between the State and Ms. Gilt serves a better purpose than just throwing her in jail.  But, of course that does not sit well with our friends at CSGV who wanted a prison term…or her death.

Apollo Project M.O.A.

Some of my Facebook friends get all giddy about the SpaceX rocket landing in a barge and amazed at its precision. Some even called it the greatest thing in space travel and it got me thinking, really? OK, the launcher was recovered, that’s great, but precision? This thing barely broke out of the Earth’s atmosphere.

I looked into the splashdown of the Apollo spacecrafts. The moon mission that was the most accurate in hitting the designated splashdown point was Apollo 16 (0.55 miles) and the less accurate was Apollo 12 (5 miles). The distance between the Earth and the Moon is 230.100 230,100 miles or for M.O.A. calculations, 404,976,000 yards. According to the formula, the MOA for a Apollo spaceship splashdown should have been 4.240,098.72 yards or roughly 2,409 miles.

Apollo 12 had an M.O.A. of 0.00207.  Apollo 16 was almost ten times less. (Do check my math. I have been wrong before.)

And that was a space program run with less computing power than the cheapest smart phone in the market and most of the engineers used slide rules to do the math and calculus.

So, no. Not impressed just yet with SpaceX.

“USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage”

Via The Feral Irishman. It looks damned good.

The USS Indianapolis carried the Hiroshima bomb from the US to the Pacific. On the return trip, it was sunk by a Japanese sub. They were out of contact with the fleet because of the secrecy of the mission.

If it sounds familiar, it might be because another movie had one of the greatest monologues ever done in Hollywood regarding the sinking of the Indianapolis. It flipped what could have been just a summer “B” movie into a classic and secured the career of a young director.
