Out of Empathy

In the collective insanity that is Post Trump America, it is almost impossible to be a reasonable person.

Today is the one year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando.

To mark this occasion, the New York Times publishes an OpEd A Night of Terror, a Year of Racism.  It was written by a gay recent college graduate.

I remember being amazed by the swift and empathetic response from the city and much of the country… As a gay person of color, I found something truly comforting about this response. Part of me felt accepted, understood and even coddled in the midst of this harrowing event.

People came together after this tragedy to support their fellow Americans.  How beautiful.

Another part felt more targeted than ever.

And victim.

This stereotyping has gotten much worse since the Pulse shooting, because despite the outpouring of support for L.G.B.T. and Latino people, the tragedy became an excuse to vilify Muslims before the 2016 presidential election.

And ISIS throwing gay men off buildings, or in the “Moderate” Muslim nation of Indonesia where gay men are caned.

From that moment on, it was clear that the tragedy would not become a reason to champion noble or productive causes like gun reform.

Never mind that the shooter was a self identified “soldier of Islam,” the real problem is guns.

Instead, it would become Exhibit A in Mr. Trump’s justification for a ban on Muslims entering the country — despite the fact that the shooter was an American and Muslim refugees have not killed anyone in the United States.

He’s right.  It seems that the leading killers in the US and UK are the children of refugees.  If we don’t let in the refugees, they won’t have radical kids.  It’s a long term strategy.

The national coverage linking Islam to the massacre was inescapable.

Yep.  Just like 9/11.

And you could feel it in Orlando. In July, a month after the tragedy, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Muslim bias had spiked in our area: A Mason-Dixon poll found that 21 percent of Central Floridians held views on Muslims that were “more negative than before the shooting.”

Pretty sure killing 49 people and wounding 50 more in the name of Allah will do that.

The Pulse nightclub shooting was a terrible act of violence against a marginalized group of people. Attacking another marginalized group is not the way to prevent more shootings, or to help survivors heal.

The real victims of the Pulse shooting were Muslims.  Yeah, 50 members of the LGBT community were dead and just as many were wounded.  But being gay is almost passe at this point.  It hasn’t been cutting edge since the late 90’s.  Will and Grace made it almost mainstream.  Muslims are the new “in” victims.  Not that a gay man ever opened fire in a Mosque as retaliation or anything.  Fifty dead gays is nothing compared to the sideways glances Muslims in the US get.

Over to The Washington Post, the article de jour was A year ago, 49 people died at Pulse nightclub. Today, Orlando remembers.

Oh no, 49 people died at a nightclub in Orlando?  Was it a bad batch of fuzzy navels?  Did they they dub step themselves to death?  What happened?

It had been a year since the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history stole 49 lives there and scarred countless others; a year since Pulse, a safe space for Orlando’s gay community, fundamentally changed.

So less died and more murdered?

We are then treated to an extended history of the club, then this.

For 12 years, the club grew into an integral space for the gay community, one shattered within a matter of minutes by a madman with a gun.

A madman.

In the entire article, the words “terrorism,” “Islamic,” or “ISIS” didn’t appear once.

The responses by the political elite on social media were just as vapid.

The slogan of the onePulse Foundation, founded in the memory of the victims, is “we will not let hate win.”

Guess what.  Hate fucking won.

A man, motivated by an ideology that hates gays, pledged allegiance to an army that murders gays, murdered 49 people in the name of his ideology,  an nobody seems to want to confront that thought crime about that.

Instead, the June 11 Gay Pride day was as a tribute to the Pulse victims, and rapidly turned into an anti-Trump #Resist march.

Welcome to 2017.  A radicalized Muslim, son of refugees, murders 49 people in a gay club in the name of Allah, and a year later the LGBT community honors the victims of the largest terrorist attack in the US since 9/11 by protesting the President of the US that wants to combat radical Islamic ideology.

Hate really fucking won.  First Islamic hate of gays scored a high body count.  Then Progressive LGBT hate of Conservatives won at the memorial for the victims.

If the LGBT community can’t address the real enemy they are facing and instead want to bash their political opponents than there is nothing I can do to help them.

Fuck it.  My well of empathy is empty.

The difference between Us and Them.

I have spent my life as a Democrat which probably isn’t that surprising considering that I am African-American. One of the things that always attracted me to the party were the ideals of equality, fighting for the little guy and our openness to differing opinions, but lately I have seen my party take a turn that makes me uncomfortable. Somewhere along the way we stopped fighting for the little guy and became the party of the smug, educated elites who look down on those with less education and deem them unable or unworthy of being able to make personal decisions for their own lives.

We teach the little guy to fight. We teach him and her that once you learn to shoot, they won’t need anybody to come to their rescue and that they are not “little” anymore.

Something interesting happens after that: The “little guy” becomes a ferocious defender of Rights that once were perceived as privilege and doled out by the Liberals only if you toed the party line.  They go from “Help us please!” to “Fuck you, get off my lawn.”

And that is why they need to get rid of us. We are dangerous as we not only provide hope but teach how to fight for it.

Vancouver man dies after pistol shooting competition accident.

Veteran gun instructor Dr. Richard Cho, 50, mistakenly shot himself in the torso.
“There was nothing suspicious in the death so the case is now with the Coroner’s office,” said Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie in an email Monday. She said police responded around 1 p.m. Sunday.”A man who had been participating in a pistol competition had lost control of his firearm and accidentally fired a shot into his torso,” an RCMP statement said. “Witnesses administered first aid immediately and the victim was transported to Royal Inland Hospital by BC Ambulance. “Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injury soon after.”

No details have been released yet as how it happened. We can guess, but it will not help things a bit. As I was pointing out to a friend, fatalities (and even non-lethal accidents) among competition shooters are so rare that when they happen, the news travels brutally fast.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Florida Stand Your Ground is Racist!!

That is what our “betters” keep saying and testify with Pentecostal fervor.  So I wanted to once again check the numbers to what has been touted and used as reference for all the claims: The Tampa Bay Times’ Stand Your Ground Law database. The TBT says in its database that “What follows is the most comprehensive list of “stand your ground” cases ever created.” Damn, that is impressive. Except they have not updated the database since October of 2014. Let’s say that the Tampa Bay Time always has been and shall be against the Second Amendment so the numbers may be tilted in favor of eliminating SYG, if at all.

Click to enlarge. And no, Zimmerman was not a SYG case, but they perpetuate the lie.

I have no idea why they have not updated the database, but the data is still there and they have been assuring us since year one that SYG is racist so the numbers for the last 8 years should prove it.

How many blacks have been the victims of SYG? According to the database, 45 Blacks died during that time frame and 38 were injured for a total of 83 victims.

Let’s compare against White victims: 81 dead and 43 injured for a total of 124.  Apparently the White folks are being decimated with SYG compared to the victims from Black population by 35%.

OK, but that does not mean squat, Whites killing Whites? Who cares? Is the Oppressive White racists killing the Black Men. Not so fast Ke-mo sah-bee! Total of White people invoking SYG after the killing of a Black Person is 11.  Total of Black people killing other Black people invoking SYG: 29 cases. That is almost three to one ratio of Black killing more Blacks under SYG than White Killing Blacks.

So there is no inherent or added racism in Florida’s Stand Your ground. It is just the constant use of the race card to elicit anger and embarrassment, to see if they can somehow turn back legislation. But it is not gonna happen, still and by far, Floridians like Stand Your ground by almost 70% and that is a huge number to flip around.

Maybe the Tampa Bay Times realized how far the numbers they obtained did not match with the message they were spreading and decided not continue updating the database? Sort of like with the Concealed Weapons Permit stats: instead of showing the world how bloodthirsty gun owners are, they became an embarrassment for politicians who were trying to badmouth people possibly 5 times more law-abiding than them.

Dear Lisa, that was a bad idea

“Very angry & very stupid Sinéad O’Connor “

A PSP Corporal and his partner, horse Sampson, were attempting to move the crowd when the defendant, Lisa Simon , used a flag pole with a silver nail at the top of the pole to strike horse Sampson in the side of the neck.  Simon did this while obstructing the troopers from performing their duties to move the crowd onto the sidewalk.

Cops don’t like when people play with their animals without permission. And they kinda take it personally when you try to injure them. Thus the next picture:

Besides the pavement, Lisa suddenly developed the following charges: Aggravated Assault-Police
Police Animals-Taunt/Torment/Strike
Offensive Weapon
Obstruction Administrative Law
Resisting Arrest
Disorderly Conduct

And add a $100,000 bail to the sticky fun.
