Reminder: Law abiding concealed carry license holder in Illinois, who have gone through two background checks (1st for the FOID, 2nd for the CCL) are prohibited from carrying concealed at a parade.
Last nite was Boston’s turn. Another “gun free” zone. SMH

“Independence Day weekend was apparently a pretty bloody one in Boston.”
May not be a “gun free zone”
In Illinois if a city issues a permit for an event, you cannot carry.
If they don’t issue a permit, as most cities don’t issue a permit for their own parades, you may carry.
Prohibited Areas
“(10) Any public gathering or special event conducted on property open to the public that requires the issuance of a permit from the unit of local government, provided this prohibition shall not apply to a licensee who must walk through a public gathering in order to access his or her residence, place of business, or vehicle.”
Then again, if you were a permit holder seeing a parade, would you assume it’s a restricted place, or would you go to the trouble to investigate whether it’s one that requires a permit? I’d think that would be hard to know, and the consequences of guessing wrong would be pretty nasty.
FYI gunman has been identified as “Booby E Crimo III” and interneting shows he is a white, aspiring “rapper”
I walk a lot of parades for congressional candidates I volunteer for. So there are about 20 municipalities that have received emails from me asking if they issued a permit for the event.
That’s just me….
Ok, so I’d say you have unusual skills or familiarity. I suspect Joe Sixpack CCW permit holder in IL would remember “no guns at parades” and is less likely to know the fine print, or care to ask the relevant chairwarmers whether it applies to any given parade in his home town.
You’d be surprised perhaps on how many people read and re-read the law to maximize their carry space……..
And the calls for “common sense” gun laws will double now. Demanding laws identical to the ones already in place in ChiTown. But, nationally, because they work so well in Chicago.
