4. In 1777, the Continental army defined an “expert marksman” as being able to hit a 7 inch target at 250 yards. One of those expert riflemen, a Sergeant by the name of Timothy Murphy, was assigned to a unit referred to as “Morgan’s Riflemen.” During the battle of Saratoga, Sgt Murphy shot and killed Brigadier General Simon Fraser.at a distance of over 300 yards.

   Later that same evening, the Sgt also shot and killed British Senior officer Sir Francis Clarke, General Burgoyne’s chief aide-de-camp at a range of nearly 350 yards.
