I think the daily lightning storms around here pretty much cull those people out before they get that big.
I like to stand about the tree’s height away from the tree. That is close enough the tree acts as a lightning rod, far enough to be reasonably safe from when it does so. The right bench might have been a good option, or the grass just behind there.
If anybody’s interested I can write up something on the physics of this.
