The dumb demonstrated here is at a level of colossal, it should merit its own niche in the pantheon of bad decisions.

Vegas Man Shot 14 Times Outside a Vegas Gun Range
Las Vegas — Officers were called at 11:59 a.m. last Weds to The Range 702, at 5999 Dean Martin Drive, after an employee reported that a man had been caught rifling through a customer’s bag during a break from a concealed carry permit course . Range employees escorted the man, Marvin Payton Jr, 27 outside to await the police.

Seconds after police pulled up, the man attacked a female officer, striking her twice with a screwdriver. Most everyone on the scene then shot Payton 14 times.

Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Brett Zimmerman said Payton had a violent history with police, including charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery of a firearm and assault on a protected person. All involved police and arriving officers had knowledge of Payton’s violent past before the shooting.

The injured officer, who has not been named, was treated and released from University Medical Center the afternoon of the shooting. She suffered a fracture near her eye, Zimmerman said.

No charges have been filed against the crowd that shot Payton.

What was actually his thought process? “I feel like stealing me a gun so why I don’t go to a gun store filled with armed people who happen to be very aware”? “And just in case, I am going to bring a screwdriver to a possible gunfight” only to close with “I am ninja! See me beat this bunch of idiots with my phillips katana!”

Only a few times a stupid game has been played so stupidly before the expected consequences happened.

Hat Tip Bobbye.

  1. But … Going against impossible odds by untrained but plucky underdogs always works out in the stories

(I believe Larry Correia refers to this as King Fu Panda syndrome.)

  2. I enjoy watching how people react and how aware they are. The four CCW holders see the attack and all move forward. They never step in front of each other. 3 draw and present as they advance, one did not.

The one that did not had the female cop between him and his target. He didn’t start his draw until he had moved pass her.

Good thing it went NYPD shooting rules. There would have been 120 rounds fired, three wounded bystanders and the perp would have been wounded, non life threatening. There would have been 50 thousand dollars of direct property damage from the shooting and 7.6 million from the BLM riots because NYPD are trigger happy killers of PoC.

    1. You are correct, except if it had been the usual NYPD rules, the perp would have had a non-life threatening wound inflicted by himself.

  3. Most everyone on the scene then shot Payton 14 times.

Lord knows I’m not a grammar nazi. However, the writer of that story needs an editor. Did everyone shoot fourteen times, or did the crowd ventilate his corpse a total of fourteen times?

    1. Precision in language is anathema to media members. It is useful to engineers, doctors, attorneys and tradesmen, though.

    1. At one job, I had a blade screwdriver whose edges had been filed down to allow insertion of slotted crews into countersunk anodized aluminum parts without scratching the anodizing. This was known as the ‘Darryl Cabey* special’. (I eventually persuaded the PTB to switch to Philips screws.)

      * D.C. being the assailant, armed with a ‘sharpened screwdriver’, whom Bernard Goetz shot and paralyzed.

  4. We can class that as a “Justice System” failure (or is that ‘feature’? hrmmmm)
27 years old with a rap sheet of several violent felonies and still on the street means the Justice System Revolving Door™ seems to work just fine.

It’s apparent Marvon felt -with a certain justification- that he could get away with whatever he wanted, with minimal consequences, until he finally ran into people who wouldn’t put up with his shit and they took care of business. Permanently. As In Dead Right There.

  5. Spectacular critical fail in the victim-selection processes.

Or if you prefer: Darwin Award winner.

  6. Can you please share the link to the quoted article? Not being “that guy,” I’d just like to spread it around.

“Most everyone present then shot Peyton 14 times.”. Thank God I’m working from home, because I freaking howled at that line!

    1. My only requirement would be that if you want to carry a firearm on a flight, make sure you have frangible ammunition that won’t depressurize the cabin.

But yeah, completely agree with the sentiment there.

      1. Actually, one or two or more bullet holes won’t depressurize an airliner. It’ll just make the pressurization system work a little harder. A pressurized airplane is constantly venting anyway.

      2. No need. I believe Mythbusters covered that; the “depressurized cabin” thing is a Hollywood myth.
A different concern, more plausible at least if you’re in a DC-10 or a 737 MAX, is hitting something flight-critical that doesn’t have adequate redundancy.

    1. Lol!! Prior to November 3rd it would have been a Covid death but Covid needs to go away now that Demetia Joe is saving us.
