Stafford was part of the backup crew, as I remember. There were a lot of this kind of haw-haw-just-kidding stuff going on in the Apollo program.
When Apollo 13 safely returned to earth, Tom Kelly and some of his LEM-designer buddies at Grumman sent North American-Rockwell a bill for the jump start and “towing” of the Command Module by the LEM. The whole story is in Tom Kelly’s book.
