A couple months ago I wrote about a woman I had arrested for identity theft. She had stolen another woman’s identity and was attempting to buy a couple new cell phones using the victim’s account. That particular criminal suspect was wearing surgical scrubs and a fake name badge (bearing the victim’s name) identifying her as a home healthcare nurse.
The point of that post was to clue folks in that uniforms and name badges are cheap and easy to obtain. Always look past “the uniform.” Uniforms are very easy to fake. Things may not be what they seem.
Last night our officers got dispatched to a shoplifting call. Store security staff recognized a known professional shoplifter (called a “booster” in the criminal vernacular) filling up a grocery cart with an obscene amount of expensive steaks and Tide Pod laundry detergent. They knew he was about to sprint out the door without paying for the groceries.
The loss prevention officers provided a very distinctive description of the suspect. He was wearing a ball cap with the word “security” written on it. What would you assume if you saw a person dressed in normal citizen clothes (no uniform) wearing a “security” hat? Would you honestly think “shoplifter” if you saw that hat? I’m willing to bet that most of you (myself included) would assume that a security guard isn’t a thief.
That’s why criminals use fake uniforms and disguises. People automatically assume someone will act in a certain role when that person is wearing a particular uniform.
It’s a dangerous (but completely normal) “thin slicing” phenomenon created by the brain in order to process information faster. Unfortunately, making assumptions about a person’s character based on the uniform they are wearing can occasionally lead to negative outcomes.
Recognize that fake uniforms are a very real thing. Try to avoid making assumptions when you see someone who might be wearing one. As I wrote earlier, things aren’t always what they seem.
I want to add one thing: Trust your gut. Believe it or not, your subconscious may know if something in the uniform is amiss and will let you know. Might it be equipment, body language or the clothing itself, bad guys will miss something specially if the uniform is complicated. BUT… it is not a sure thing that you will get that warning alarm. Just don’t lower your guard and be careful.

We are not sure why this happens. Maybe Al Gore is right and cold weather also creates Global Warming and that is why we have these events.
The good news is that by tomorrow we should be in the 70s again and next week we will more than likely turn on the Air Conditioner.

Another Day, Another NRA Bash Party.
So Marion Hammer had the audacity to express her thoughts about the incoming NRA Board election and the Book of faces lost its collective poop again. If you have not seen it, the NRA is and has been for at least 50 years actually a Gun Control Organization. Others are demanding the immediate cease of existence of the NRA and its Board Members be tried for treason.. or some idiocy like that.
The one that really ranked me was a well-known firearms instructor who had no problem dumping on Ms Hammer. I thought to myself “Is this guy an idiot (as many people have suggested) or did he simply ignores that it is directly because of Marion Hammer and her work in Florida and Concealed carry Laws that he actually gets to traipse the country making money instructing folks on how to shoot when they carry.
If we do not remember our history and have a small amount of respect for those who came before us and put up a LOT of work, we are doomed to lose our guns.
Stop being fashionable, start using your brains.
PS: I forgot the NRA Hater Paradox: They want the NRA to stop collecting money and to go fight in each individual State’s legislature (plus the Fred) against an Opposition that is being funded by a Billionaire and has unlimited free press access, all positive.
The haters will just sit and watch, of course.
Why we need the Death Penalty.
In 2014, Luis Bracamontes shot and killed two two Sacramento-area deputies, wounded another one and shot a civilian in the head to boot. He is on trial now and even his defense attorney has said he did what he did. Mr. Bracamontes is not very remorseful.
He is up for the Death Penalty and I am guessing his lawyer is trying to avoid that and get him Life without Parole.
He needs the get the needle. Sending him to prison is just a vacation for the asshole and not only that, he will be considered a VIP because he offed two cops. He will be high in the prison’s criminal pantheon, to be admired and respected for his past behavior. He will be mentioned as example to be followed by lesser criminals. Dead, he will only feed the worms.
Then again, I would not mind to see him found not guilty and let walk around free in the streets of Sacramento. Oh yes, I forgot: He is an illegal alien with a long record. That is the California Way, right?
