FEMA isn’t magic – Divemedic

No, this FEMA guy’s phonebook is filled with the contact information of local and state resources that can be called in an emergency. Those resources respond, tracking expenses and man hours used, and the FEMA guy then breaks out the checkbook to reimburse the states involved. The Governor doesn’t call out FEMA for shit. If you want to get technical, FEMA can’t do a thing unless the President tells them to. (Didn’t Trump catch hell for that recently?) FEMA’s largest contribution is writing the check to pay for it all.

FEMA isn’t magic – Area Ocho

Go read the whole thing and then pass it along to those with DeSantis Derangement Syndrome.

A quick thought on the alleged FEMA response to the Surfside Building Collapse.

FEMA is not the Thunderbirds. The do not have fantastic ships capable to fly anywhere in the world at Mack 17 and deliver trained personnel in fantastic machines that will solve a natural disaster before the commercial break.

FEMA is the federal equivalent of Costco: they provide supplies, cash and the occasional guidance by the same people that can’t keep the highways from coming apart and take 3 decades to build an overpass.

This is Florida: Every year, government and civilians train and expect a natural disaster from June till November. I trained in Community Response Teams and although it bears the stamps and monies from FEMA, my instructors were Miami Dade Fire Rescue who had actually had experience in dealing with emergencies and taught us how to attend to disasters including building collapses. It was not some flunky from D.C. trying to tell us how smart them folks up there are.

Searching for victims in collapsed structures. Training to help your neighbors right then and there, not waiting for FEMA to show up.

FEMA can’t figure out where are the paperclips, but somehow we are supposed to allow them full control when something happens in our neighborhood? And they have almost ZERO training on actual hands on rescue and recovery?

Hard pass on that one

NBC News joins the Surfside Collapse DeSantis Derangement Orgy

With America’s local-state-federal divide, however, the country simply cannot guarantee a quick and efficient response to mass-casualty disasters as things now stand. When every minute is crucial to saving lives, our inability to mandate an instant call-up of resources across city and state lines is literally killing people.
The tragedy unfolding in Miami seems to reflect the inadequacies of the system we have in place. Hannah Dreier of The Washington Post questioned why it took Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis almost a full day to issue the necessary declarations to bring federal disaster response teams to the beachfront scene: “FEMA was ready to deploy to the condo collapse almost immediately, and included the crisis in its daily briefing, but didn’t get permission from Gov. DeSantis to get on the ground for a full day.”

Miami condo collapse shows how the U.S. keeps getting disaster response wrong (nbcnews.com)

The commentary and “facts” by Hanna Dreier already have been pretty much destroyed as a political hack job by anybody with more than two interconnected neurons. But to say that a quick response was not provided is an outright lie. This is a screen capture of just the Miami Dade Rescue units that had responded to the building collapse by 5:33 am which was the time I checked their calls response page.

That is over 100 MDFR units. I don’t have the exact time, but I believe that by daylight, any survivors stuck in the still standing part of the building were rescued and taken to a safe location. I guess we should have some Marvel Super Hero on call who is capable of safely levitate thousands of tons of concrete while gently plucking the remains of the victims in the time it takes to order a Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino.

Response by rescue personnel was never an issue, but political attack jobs by the Media using the corpses of the trapped to attack the Governor of Florida is truly a sickening trend.

Sorry, busy as hell.

Moving day approaches and we have been busy. 90% of the packing is done and while waiting for the container to arrive, I am doing the obligatory painting inside the house to make it look “purty” for the realtor’s photos. The only area left to take care off is the living room/dining area and part of the kitchen which cannot be done till all the boxes stashed there are in the container.

I hate painting. That said, I went airless with both gun and roller. I would have lost my mind painting the popcorn ceiling, but thanks to the gun they actually look great , but I keep over spraying the walls and  getting runs. Nothing that a sander with 80 grit paper cannot fix.

At least the missus was smart and decided that we were going to hire a service to deep clean the floors. Having Mexican tile is not the greatest idea for flooring, trust me on that. It is triple cost to clean compared with what a normal tile floor costs. Good news? It is all done in one day. If we have to do flooring in the future, it will either be bamboo or some exotic artificial crap that can stand half megaton nukes and can be cleaned with a thought.

The only thing I have planned to do outside the moving stuff is to go to Mass after Governor DeSantis signs the expanded church carry bill. If something interesting comes along, I’ll take a break and post about it.

Oh yeah, the Surfside Building collapse  idiocy of the day.

Could recent Navy blast off Florida coast have contributed to Surfside condo collapse? (wptv.com)

Signed by Officers and Presented to Governor:06/28/2021 2:24 PM     H     Signed by Officers and presented to Governor

The Governor can sign it, veto it or ignore it. If he ignores it, it becomes law after 7 days from presentation.  I don’t think he will veto it and I believe that we will see it signed later today or tomorrow tops.

I was beginning to fear I would leave Florida without going to Mass.
