This video has been making the rounds in the webs with pretty much the general title of “I’d change my undies.”

Personally I don’t think I’d feel threatened if I was in that situation. And it is not because I like Yogi (I have very healthy respect for bears) but because the bear was showing curiosity instead of aggression. Nothing in its demeanor was saying it was a threat but just trying to figure what was thing up in the tree.

But rest assured, I’d be holding a big caliber handgun just in case it decided I was a good example of lunch.

  1. Bears are very unpredictable; one time they will run if you yell at them; another they can charge while you are firing at them. You never know what the goofy bastards will do.

  2. once the bear started up the tree I don’t think there would have been enough underwear for me… ! Of course in Texas we don’t get many bears.. so …..

  3. Heh. Looks like he climbed up, took a good whiff….caught scent of what was now residing in the hunter’s drawers, and shimmied back down. Not a bear-whisperer or anything, but yeah, I’d agree with the “curiosity” assessment. Although, as RobertG pointed out, they’re goofy and have the mood swings of a PMS’ing woman.

  4. Then again, there’s the rattlesnake and me. I don’t have that fear of snakes that so many people do, and I was crawling thru the chapparal in the Santa Monica Mountains once. I found myself eyeball-to-eyeball with a rattler. At first I was startled, and backed off, but I quickly saw that the snake did not threaten me, but just watched me. I settled down to watch it for a while, enjoying the snake the whole time. Finally, we went our separate ways, and I had a story to tell.

    Hole Lee Shiite!

Anything that can treat a Corolla as an easy-opening pull-top gets my complete and utter panic.

    1. I suppose there’s something to that, but I think that people can read an animal’s behavior, and act accordingly. That doesn’t mean we should not have an effective defense at the ready, but we don’t have to kill willy-nilly, either.

But if you want to see a REALLY dangerous animal, look in the mirror.

  6. the first time i saw that video, all i heard in my head was “OH GOD, SO SORRY. didn’t see you up here, beg pardon. i’ll be going now.” **climbs down tree**

definitely not a bear that would scare me, though i’d be nervous until he climbed back down.
