Heavy flow is not massive hemorrhage: Tampons don’t belong in IFAKs – Crisis Medicine (crisis-medicine.com)

I love this photo comparison:

And you can search other serious places and find pretty much the same response: Don’t use a frigging tampon to stop massive blood loss.

  1. I suppose if it’s all you have it’s better than nothing; any port in a storm and all that.
    .
But it shouldn’t be in your kit in place of a real clotting bandage.

    1. @It’s just Boris: My thought as well. Not ideal, but better than a tissue.

In one on the mass shootings (I forget which one), a student used an electrical cord as an emergency tourniquet. Not ideal…

  2. My mother, a degree nurse (RN with a degree and later a Master) added tampons and pads to my first in car first aid kit. I pushed the “tampons are good for stopping bleeding” myth for many years.

Then I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brfeu2f-LFY

    It shows the difference.

Today you can by much better options, from a gauze impregnated with a clotting agent to a clotting agent that is in an applicator that you shove into a puncture wound and “inject” in place. There are Israeli combat wraps and a host of other options. In an IFAK there really is no reason to waste space on a tampon.

There is a reason for anything bigger. Just ask your lady the first time they really really need the one from your car kit.

I’m glad people continue to point out how awful the bullshit tampon advice is because it has a lot of potential to get someone killed.

  4. I can’t believe this one is still out there.
I mean, I guess if you’re a dumbass and need to stop a nosebleed, or a WOMAN and have lady problems to deal with, sure…

  5. I remember seeing people wearing these during training classes and shoot houses, after the Army of 2 video game came out, threaded through molle. A fair few of them were unwrapped for “quick deployment” I always thought they looked a bit like teeny suicide vests like that.

I wonder where this originally started?

  6. Miguel,

Thanks for trying, but some stupidity is just too widespread among the ignoratii to stamp out.

The “tampon” that works is called QuikClot, et al.

Anything by Tampax isn’t even in the same universe.
But cheap stupid bastards can’t help themselves.
This is where Jordan Petersen’s lament about the societal problem of sub-80 IQ people is going to haunt us for centuries.
    And they breed and vote…
