Chef: A nice movie for a change.

Rarely Indie movies make up the expectations. Most of them suffer the maladies of the corporate ones: making up the deficiencies of a lousy script with outrageous crap instead of good writing and acting.

I took the chance to see the movie just on the fact that Jon Favreau was on it (loved the guy since PCU) The trailer does not make it justice to a feel-good-without-being-mushy film. It is funny, it is “educational” and it will leave you hungry. I was also amazed at the presence of big-ticket stars doing small roles which tells you more about Favreau’s as a person that as a Hollywood power player.

The movie is available in Netflix and in Amazon Instant Video ($2.99 rental and worth it.) No idea if other sites have it.

Please, do not see this movie if you have not eaten. The recipes are available online.

And if you excuse me, I am gonna make me a grilled cheese sandwich now.

PS: I forgot to mention the music…. outstanding.

Papers Please.

punto de control

It is Carnaval (Mardi Gras) time in Venezuela and people get in their vehicles to spend time outside the cities. This also the time where the Government decides to set up “alcabalas” (checkpoints) all over the country with armed personnel to allegedly check for criminals traveling or engaged in bad things. Depending on the state and the level of their bank accounts, you can find these checkpoints every 50 kilometers on non-expressway roads (which make the majority of the roads in the country. Think of them as unauthorized tolls with monies going to the pockets of the local cops and Guards. And if you are thinking about being cool, just drive through and “eff” them, they will shoot you without giving it a second thought.

Guilty Verdict in Brutal Sledgehammer Attack Case

Yue Kui Cen

A man charged in a 2011 sledgehammer attack on a Little Havana grocery store clerk was found guilty Friday.

Rodobaldo Sanchez, 53, was found guilty on charges of attempted first degree murder and armed robbery in the attack on Yue Kui Cen.

Cen suffered brain damage as a result of the attack and can’t speak. He’s wheelchair-bound and severely incapacitated.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors showed DNA evidence of a blood-soaked shirt and cap they said Sanchez was wearing during the attack.
Prosecutors said the whole attack was planned and that Sanchez went to the store to steal cigarettes and milk.

I posted about this case back in 2011 regarding mindset, and even though justice was served, in reality is little consolation for the victim or his family.

I do hope Sanchez gets Life in Prison, Mr. Cen will certainly end his days on a prison possibly more cruel than Raidford.
