Like many people, Harris-Perry is confused about “stand your ground.” SYG is a law that prevents the prosecution of people who use lethal force rather than retreating in what are otherwise legitimate self-defense cases. It is not invoked by defendants because it’s irrelevant at trial (because defendants can’t be accused of murder for failing to retreat). However, because SYG pertains only to actual cases of self-defense, by invoking it as a contributing factor in the death of TM, TM’s apologists are actually (if unwittingly) admitting that GZ was acting in self-defense and condemning TM for the actions that led to his demise, because SYG can only be a factor in cases of self-defense. SYG laws cannot and do not protect actual murderers.
