I almost gave myself a heart attack today. Somehow, I managed to lose about a third of 111 files worth three years of research from the original folder and one of the back-ups. Thankfully the second back-up was intact, and I was able to recoup everything.

Two is one and one is none.

And now I have the original and three back-ups.

  1. Some years ago I lost about two years of work in a similar experience. I now have three backups. Only need to suffer one catastrophic failure like that during a lifetime.

  2. Belt AND suspenders… belt and suspenders…

Also, consider getting a Blu Ray burner with M-DISK capability. (Not sure if I spelled that correctly.) If I understand correctly the M-Disk will retain your information for decades, whereas a normal recordable disk can lose your info much sooner. A disk takes up almost zero space in a safe, but it is worth the effort to burn one.
