BERLIN — A wrought-iron gate bearing the Nazis’ cynical slogan “Arbeit macht frei,” or “Work sets you free,” has been stolen from the former Dachau concentration camp, police said Sunday.

Why would anyone want that evil piece of history? And eve if they just want to destroy it, the memory of those who passed or what happened to them by it cannot be erased.

  1. Been to Dachau 3 times. Each time was chilling. After the ovens, which still have a residual layer of ash in them, and the “Arbeit macht frei” sign, the most horrible thing is a wall that has written upon it, in all the languages of Europe, “Never again.” It’s chilling, because given their druthers, most European nations would conveniently forget that promise (at times they already have).
